fuel gauge.. bit of a strange one?

filled the FF to the absolute brim yesterday with Dielsel (under instruction from SWMBO coz she wants her 10X nectar points). I know the tank is full however the fuel gauge when i shift to neutral the gauge drops to empty.. as soon as i put into drive goes back up to full. Any ideas anyone.. Every other gauge/gadget working perfect???.

thanks all Tone

PS.. there was still a 1/4 tank when i filled her up (the FF not the mrs) so i had not run it to anywhere near empty remaining silent when one should be protesting makes cowards of brave men.

the gauge is governed by the 2 in tank sender units, it basically takes an average of both of the units, and displays this as the reading. It could be that one of the senders is at fault and the gauge is having a dicky fit dos it doesn't understand the inputs its getting.

not sure it really has anything to do with the D/N position, could just be giving it a bit of a jolt to a good bit on the potentiometers.

mine 3.6 did the full to empty gauge thing just before a trip to france and it was sorted by swapping the in tank senders. not a cheap item or clean job though......

One way to prolong the inevitable is not to fill it to the brim Thumbs Up should be able to get away with a few more months then before it needs changing. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Sounds like one of the senders to me, common issue, as long as the miles left doesn't change it should be a sender, pain in the proverbial but sometimes sort themselves out, not much help I know Thumbs Up

Coming from the D3 side I can only explain the characteristics of a D3 and add I have had experience of this "feature". The easiest way to explain it is imagine it is a clock(timepiece), when the fingers go past 12 the next figure is 1, this is what is happening with your gauge the needle is slightly out of sync with the sender and is going slightly past full, this in turn is taking it to the next figure which is zero. Taking it further I have seen the opposite situation when the fuel is very low or when the engine has been switched off the needle has rested at full. I am sure it will correct itself when you have used some fuel.

I bet when you tell the missus' about the funny readings, and what to expect, all she will say, is....
' Did you swipe the nectar card!'
