So I have a 3.6 TDV8 FFRR. This is my very first diesel so I am not sure about how much smoke under heavy acceleration is acceptable (one would think no smoke at all is the answer but I keep hearing how diesel must smoke etc etc).

I have read about upper IC hoses that usually go bad on these and asked my mechanic to have a look, he did, but very briefly and without taking them out - is there a chance I am getting smoke under heavy acceleration due to some very tiny, not really visible cracks that are not to be found without inspecting the pipes out of the car?

Car runs fine, no issues at all, it is just the annoying smoke cloud that I see in my mirrors when I floor it, especially at night when following cars headlights make it even more visible. Or am I going crazy and these DO smoke even without issues?

Diesels always has a puff when you throttle it hard, but it should subside in one or two seconds.. If it's leaving a massive cloud constantly under heavy acceleration, I'd be searching for a split hose.. Either that, it's running rich, or you may have a problem..

I had a split hose, leading to massive smoke, but went away again when fixed..

I also had a faulty temperature sensor, car always thought it was cold, and ran rich all the time..

why didn't your mechanic take them off ,its a 2 minute job ,
they have been known to split under the sleeve on the near side 1,
for the sake of £50 get 2 new ones and throw them on ,and go from there . 2007 tdv8 se ,stornaway grey

Well my smoke stays all the way to 180 kmh, at least that's what I noticed today.

Hope it is just one of the pipes.

If you can see it in your mirrors then its too much.

As said above - the hoses are fairly cheap and they are quick & easy to change.

They seem to go anyway sooner or later - so consider them a service item and do them anyway

It is only two top ones that need addressing or there is more?

It seems to be the 2 top ones that split and cause the smoke and would be the first thing to eliminate as it's quick & cheap & they will go anyway at some point, so not much to lose by doing that first
