Thanks for your support guys - now I just hope plugs 7 and 8 are not in a similar state as they are more difficult to get to due to LPG pipework, fuel line and restriction due to side of engine bay.

In fairness only 6 was misfiring and I can see why in the plugs state when extracted. 7 & 8 were hopefully changed on last service. (Stan - there is no fingers crossed icon I can find for this.)

I gave up this afternoon on changing those as I considred I had probably exhausted my luck for one day and we have all been there thinking I will just finish off this last bit, should not take long then SNAP Howard

Well done SMUTT glad your sorted.
If my memory serves me correctly, wd 40 was invented by nasa for the rocket programme.
As normal oil and lubricants freeze easily in space wd40 was invented to combat the alien environment.
so I understand.
Anyway well done. Thumbs Up

just a follow up, WD40..... the WD is 'Water Displacer' i think there is a rumour, that its mainly fish oil... but here.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WD-40 parhaps not.
i use it, here and there, but i have a can of some funny trade name stuff, that works, like plusgas.

often, with a seized bolt/nut, a few sprays and soaks, works, if not, then you can try sharp hammer blows, and resoaks, and finally localised high heat. all these are not really possible on spark plugs. so patience and afore-thought is the way forward. in all such instances, back and forth, is the way.

I am racked with guilt. Changed all my plugs last week and they all came out with ease, even though I have lpg pipe work.........

Hi,
you are 100% correct :-http://wd40.com/cool-stuff/history.

I can also remember when RS was not 6+ volumes of industrial products for sale but 1 thin A4 booklet and was called Radio Spares. Opps this sounds like a decent into historical trivia Whistle .

SMUTT, I'm glad you got the b8stard out. I know how it feels having driven many old crates for decades. Also glad you got a good tip from JBA. WD40 is OK for what it was designed for and I do use it quite a lot as well but when it comes to this sort of stuff, I have a few penetrating oils on the shelves. Unfortunately the best (my dad found it and gave it to me years ago) is Reductor. No idea where to get it from, luckily I do have a few other penetrating oils.

The thing indeed is time, when the bolt or in this case that spark plug is so corroded into place, it takes a LONG time for the penetrating oil to work its way in and I'm glad that you didn't do the blunt thing (that I'm sometimes guilty of) and went all force and no finesse. Well done Smile. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Thanks for everyones support - I have now changed all the plugs - No.7 also took several hours to get out but not as bad a state as No.6

Both plugs 6 & 7 appear (I suspect) greased before inserted. This has probably melted and worked its way down to the spark plug protruding into the cylinder, at which point it became baked hard when engine firing. It therefore acted like a nut inside the cylinder to prevent the plug coming out.

They were also marked BMW / Bosch FGR7DQP which could mean they were fitted in the factory - perhaps by a disgruntled employee who thought he would brighten his day in 13 years time at my expense.

Engine now runs beautifully - so happy - Very Happy Howard
