With all the fuss about diesel, return to petrol engines?

Never owned anything that runs on DERV myself*, but after the VW scandal can't help wondering if the big push to oil burners might slow a bit now and a 'basic' petrol engine will be re-introduced.

I was never a diesel fan, always had petrol powered cars but when I decided to go L322 route, it turned out pretty much all available used cars from the 2007-2009 generation were 3.6 TDV8 powered. There was literally ONE 2007 4.4 V8 (305 hp) available for sale in my country (US import) but it did not have vented seats, had a bunch of accessories that I would have to get rid of immediately (roof rails, sidesteps, mudflaps) and also had speedo in MPH which would bug me so decided to give a TDV8 a go. Found a nice one, with great specs (buckingham blue with parchment and grand black lacquer piano trim, vented seats, factory 20" rims) and so far I am really happy with it. Consumption is great, low rev range is not really bad as it has auto box. So far I am really happy.

And I have to add that even though I like fast cars I never really considered going Supercharged in an L322. Somehow I feel it is not a wise choice, consumption is terrible and performance is not really impressive anyway. It sure is faster than a TDV8 but not fast by any means.

I wouldn't be surprised if the same 'scandal' hits petrol engines too. I would think the same software code could be added to Petrol engine management to make them lean off if they detect they're being put through an emissions test.

I assume that none of you have towed any weight, because Derv is better at low end grunt, which is better for pulling heavy trailers, not to mention the way better fuel consumption when towing Whistle Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I certainly will never concider a diesel car,my friend has the tdv8 and sounds like an old tractor compared to my 4.4 petrol,i drive a diesel van all week so driving becomes a pleasure when in the car.

Correct, in fact virtually no obnoxious gases coming out the exhaust end. Strange then that the government decided several years ago that when raising fuel duty, it would raise lpg duty by that little bit more in order to slim down the difference between the petrol\derv duty and the lpg duty.

You could run a vehicle on tap water and I'd bet they would still want it to be a special, dyed tap water with a level of duty on it. !!

Does anyone actually know what is the most cost effective to produce? Petrol or Diesel? I read somewhere that refining petrol is more costly but you get more end product from less raw material, making it about the same in cost terms.

I guess there is an argument for both fuels.
