To Derv or not to Derv

What do you make of this ? Been toying with a change away from my current LPG petrol model to a diesel, solely because there is a bigger choice in used diesel FF's.

Don't want to be
1. stuck unable to get enough fuel to use for my business
and
2. be stuck with a vehicle I can't move on due to fuel scarcity.

Surprised it wasn't in the Express or Mail Whistle

I wouldn't let this type of "sensationalist" reporting affect your decision - strikes me as a pretty shallow PR initiative to get the RAC into the media Whistle

is it just an excersise: to make us panic buy as much as we can store in buckets, in the garage/hallway?

better stick with the gas, you can still buy it at camping shops. there's no queueing there! -and you still have the full petrol tank -in reserve

Price of diesel has recently dropped lower than petrol for the first time in many years, so this will be is the perfect excuse for them to hike the price up again without any other reasonable explanation required...

After persuading us all to go diesel it seems they're now trying to do the opposite. Who knows what's coming next? On that basis I'll drive what I want rather than worry about what the next trend is going to be.

Besides, if there were to be a diesel shortage I'm sure some Bio plants would soon spring up in the various refineries. If there's a demand the suppliers will meet it somehow.

Anyway, either way I'll be OK. The Fattie is Petrol and the Skoda runs on veg oil.

A few years ago the big deal on diesel was the particles that they produced were dangerous, so then manufacturers fitted DPF to the engines, today diesel engines are so clean that the exhaust tailpipe never gets dirty. Below is a picture of the inside of my Audi exhaust, yes I cleaned the exterior but the inside is untouched and as clean as a whistle

They can't scare us with the 'unhealthy diesel engines' any more so they have to come up with another reason to up the price

NO2 is a gas though. The traditional diesel soot is being burned off by DPF units, which doubtless produce ever more NO2. Just because it looks clean doesn't mean it is.

Yes, petrols produce CO2 and diesels to a lesser degree do the same but opinion (at present) is that NO2 is more harmful to humans.

As long as we have petrol , we will have diesel , its all refined from the same product crude oil.

yes diesel is cheaper at the moment but that is just a market driven price from OPEC controlling production and a recent demand for petrol vehicles , more and more people are going back to petrol , not with RR but certainly with smaller cars

I was speaking to a Jag dealership on sunday as I was test driving a XF and they told me that the new XE range has completely sold out of the petrol variant . the planned production was to make about 70% cars in diesel and about 30% in petrol , but due to the economy of the petrol engine , their sales have been 80% petrol. Jag have run out of petrol engines for now !

If you bought one and diesel started to become hard to come by there is always red or kero that would do the job in a pinch.

Personally the diesel vehicle out of my 2 that i use the most runs on Veg so im already saving money and not using dead dinosaurs to fuel it.

Yes its a bit sooty at times but its done 220k and the injectors have never been off.
I clear the soot out when i wash it by squirting some fairy liquid up a warm exhaust and then filling it up with the hose Very Happy leave it to settle over night and then start her up in the morning and all the nasty stuff goes down the drain(where it would mostly go anyway while out on the road!) and its then soot free for a good while afterwards Very Happy

The other cars i have are petrol and none of LPG fuelled at all so thats one less thing i worry about Very Happy FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

hee hee, fairy liquid...... I remember my mate's Dad used to run a coach hire business, he used to laugh at people washing their cars, and polishing them, then he would fill up the exhaust, with some goo, and the hosepipe, and take it for a late night run......round the block... side exiting exhaust, (1970's) meant that all parked cars were almost all the same colour. -black!
