How does 3.6 TDV8 Gearbox Handle Tuning?

I am considering a remap for my 3.6 TDV8 FFRR.

Any experience with how transmission handles that? TQ issues?

I heard these transmissions are not really good (my car already had TQ replaced by previous owner) so I wonder if increasing torque to as much as almost 800 nm is a good idea.

All my previous cars have been at least remapped (Impreza GT, RS4, 911 Turbo) so I feel I should try this here as well!

I thought about a remap a lot. I have had all my previous TD cars mapped (and some inter cooler work too) but when I bought it the seller (private RR specialist) said do not remap it. I tow a 1900kg caravan and it's no slouch even loaded. Of a few folks on here looking to create a quick RR I'd be tempted to sell it and buy a SC version. There have been a few success stories on here, but some not so good ones too.

Looking at your past cars, I wouldn't be expecting 911 or Impreza pace from a 3 tonne diesel Whistle Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

It can be done, but to be honest if you want a quick Range Rover then buy a SC as nick says, folks have successfully done it with little problem in the past, but it does put extra strain on most components, turbos being particularly succeptable to problems and We seem to be seeing a few more stories of 3.6 turbo failure over the last few months (or I might be imagining it) on 07/08my cars. It's your car, your choice, and there will be folks who will be pro and those against, personally I wouldn't bother, it's not supposed to be a fast car, it's a 3 tonne armchair, you will just be going that little bit faster when you get to the corner, so will have to brake harder or you will be in that field, with the spuds and sunflowers...... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I had mine done with no problems for about a year - the engine remap only cost 300 quid or so and I felt it worth it. I now have an SC but AFAIK the other car is still doing good service for another member. Geoff

The gearbox is the ZF 6HP28 series and is fairly robust. It can suffer with various things and most seem to be related to TC and clutch packs. Fluid changes help a lot as does having the mechatronic unit serviced by ZF. I've just had SWMBOs Mech unit done in her XF which is ostensibly the same box. It is like having a new box again, crisp changes and very little TC slip.

Worth noting that there is also a remap for the box available. No personal experience of it though. But if it promotes earlier lock up that ought to save wear on the TC and clutches.

I also had a BAR Remap and in the 80k or so miles that I did with the car, had no issues Thumbs Up

I did it mainly to fix a flat spot in low end acceleration coming of roundabouts etc and found the resulting rema much smoother.

The extra mid range performance was welcome too though Twisted Evil

Nope, definitely 6HP26, the 5.0Sc got the 28 but the 4.2 and 3.6 got the 26. Thumbs Up

Ostensibly the same box. The 28 is really only a 2nd generation 26 with few (if any) physical differences, only altered mapping for TC lock up and to reduce drag when sat still at idle. Strangely the 28 has a lower torque rating for some reason, only (only!) 625nm against 640nm for the 26.

When the Gen 2 6HPs were launched by ZF at the end of 2006 their sales literature claimed that the input torque capacities of the three models had increased over their Gen 1 counterparts (though the weights had gone up slightly too)

The last 6HP came off the Saarbrucken production line in March 2014, almost 13 years after the start of production, and just over 7 million units had been built during that time (though they’re still being manufactured in Shanghai, just for the Chinese market).

Yes, we have 6HP26 for sure, as I noticed my friends V10 RS6 had 6HP28 last time I had a chance to see it lifted and thought we had same box only to find out RR has a 26 one.

I had my 3.6 remapped and never realised the torque increase took it way over the 8 speed max let alone the 6 speed but i never had an issue of over 80k miles. It was also quicker and had great throttle response.

I was just discussing with the mapper today about my 4.4 and my concerns over the extra 100 nm torque and he pointed out my 3.6 map gave an extra 110 nm after remap. 2015 4.4 AB

Coming up to 40k after having it off Craig and still a flyer, no issues cept a broken actuator which took a turbo so all done and back to being perfect for me again not sure what other bits it’s had but it’s quite quicker than a pals remapped 3.6 so you’ll be happy when you’ve done it Thumbs Up _____________________________________________________
