Yes probably to do with fraud, has anyone noticed lately that some recovery /transporters mostly cover part of the plate when once they did not.

I must admit i've done it with pics of my mini on websites. But in reality it's not that easy to get an address these days. You have to show a strong case for having the details. ie. details of an accident with a crime ref number. Or photos if it's abandoned on your land. And even then the DVLA notify the registered keeper in writing about who has asked for the details.
There are only a few reasons they'll let you have the info and they'll reject the application if you don't fit into one of them.

A couple of months ago i asked them for the details of my old cars new keeper so i could forward them the spare numberplates i'd found in the garage and see if i could transfer across the warranty. They rejected my application, but did allow me to write a letter which they forwarded to the new keeper.

In reality it's easier to just see the car on the street and follow you home, or force you off the road and hijack you.

One possible risk and the reason recovery firms and breakers obscure the number plates is people with a similar car can make up some false plates with your reg number on it and put on their car. So it isn't flagged up by ANPR cameras as having no insurance etc. Plates from written off cars can be used to avoid speeding fines etc. Some times they'll just steal the physical plates from a car in a car park somewhere.

The criminal thing is Censored - if you want to clone a car, then all you need to do is walk through a car park to find one similar.

The only reason to blur is if you're doing something that you may not want a future purchaser to know about - so if I had my car off road, or on a track day, or with accident damage Whistle then I would probably blur it.

I agree you can find a similar one in a car park. I was told by a member of staff from Copart that's why they blank off theirs on their transporters. But i suppose if you clone the plates from a car you know is going to be off the road for a while or sitting in a repairers compound then it might mean you get a couple of days extra use out of the plate. ie. registered keeper gets a speeding ticket, they tell the police the car has been with a repairer on the day in question so the police go and visit the repairer and it drags out the investigation by a couple of days.
On the other hand something from Copart is unlikely to be taxed or insured - so who knows!

they do that because things like ANPR or congestion charge cameras would confuse a number plate on a vehicle with that of the vehicle that its on . previous owners would get automatic penalties for untaxed/insured vehicles that were just being transported

That's a fair point, an automated system might still send a penalty out.

I always blur them, just to be on the safe side.

If I were a car crim, all it takes is a few mins to browse to your chosen cars forum, quick look through the user photos and you have a plate that won't raise suspicion on APR as its on the right type of car.

Highly unlikely, but why risk it? __________________

There was a thread about this earlier in the year. As I have had a bad experience from someone cloning the Mini's plates a few years back after I posted pics on mini2.com, I have always blurred my plates online since.
