What's everyone's view on publishing their car photos with number plates showing?

I've never seen the problem with it if say, the car is photographed away from the home in say a field. If I had a millionaires pad, I wouldn't be taking photos outside for reasons I'll explain

I ask, because I did exactly this with mine. I photographed it up in a hill on the Long Mynd and put it on Facebook. A colleague of mine posted that I should be blurring the number plates as anyone can pay the DVLA to find a registered keeper and thus, find out where you live and steal the car. I take the view that anyone can do this anyway, whilst out on the streets. Why they'd do it from a photo doesn't really make any sense.
My car is seen by 1000's of drivers every day whilst commuting etc. Any one of them could note the registration and contact DVLA. No-one does (as far as I know) so why would they do it from a social media photo?

Probably laziness. It's easier to find images on line than it is to go looking for physical vehicles out on the streets.

those that blur - well it keeps them happy I suppose , must live in a paranoid world though (all in their heads)

i have used that idle threat, in an altrication. ie im not in a car, and another car is trying to run me over. i argue, he hoots, and shouts, i reply,
'listen, i can find where you live, and target you in a campaign of endless vandalism.... your address costs me £2.50 from the dvla. and it doesnt help to even, sell your car. either. now drive off!'

but there are sad people that do look up numbers, sometimes in order to buy a car from someone. that can be spooky.

Not the only reason but a good reason to blur the number plate is to avoid someone from the criminal fraternity using your plate on a stolen car/cloned car.

You will be pretty if you start getting parking charges for the centre of London etc, simply because someone saw your number plate.

They usually clone cars from miles away so little chance of being found out & best source of cars - autotrader & the like  Paul

Depends up on where you are on this little ball. In Holland more then a few drive around with copied numberplates and it will be you getting the speedtickets etc.

I agree with pjb, the biggest risk is criminals using your numberplate for a stolen/cloned car (obviously you need the same make and model as a minimum)

That said, with a huge number of non-blurred numberplates, all conveniently indexed by make, model and derivative on Autotrader, I wouldn't be too worried about posting up non-blurred pics on facebook or the like  2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

Some years ago I was driving past a garage in Noth Newnton (Wiltshire), the garage in question I think was run by Reeder Bros who raced Ferrari's, on their forecourt was a superb Lamborghini Miura SV. I stopped and asked if it would be OK to take some photos of the car for my own collection, their answer was 'Yes but wait until we cover the number plates as the owner is a bit twitchy about having his car photographed!!'

Well dont have a bloody Lamborghini Miura then!!!

It's a good question - the reason I blur photos (if I remember or can be bothered) is that you don't need to write down or otherwise take a note of the number of a moving or parked car. The photo is available 24/7 to look at in the privacy of your own home on your own computer in your own time. Also if you look at our site in the main you only see desirable Range Rovers although if you read the forum postings they are less desirable  Geoff

unless you are the police or a parking company or a county council/ baliffs ect you have a registered and valid interest in obtaining customer details via the dvla then you can not get details from the number plate, anyone can apply to the dvla for personal details but you have to apply in writing with a strong case for getting the Data, such as car abandonded on your property with photos, its not easy. I think the myth is that people will see your plate and possibly use it on a car they might steal at some time in the future.

Ive never covered plates up before and never had a problem
