Hi, I had a water pump leak so decided after reading wiki to do it today, sounds so easy, lol.
After fabricating a tool to lock and remove viscous fan (free to be borrowed by anyone near Durham) I proceeded to remove water hoses at which point the elbow snapped off the top hose ! Ah well new hose needed.
Water pump fitted and decided to remove rest of top hose fittings this is where it got really interesting the small hose near oil cooler also snapped and a spring and valve flew out of the unit.
Well I am convinced this was plastic going brittle and not a case of sever sausage fingers !

Anyhow whats the correct name for the four way manifold affair alongside the oil cooler.

I think you are referring to the lower left of the rad area, looking down from above, the transmission fluid radiator. there is a smallish black plastic cover that has (as you describe) the junction of coolant hoses, and a clip or two to locate it onto the said mini-rad. it is available, but I cant tell you what its called. but you could search part numbers. using diagrams. (rave?) that's really the best direction. first the engine area, then water circuit, and then look for the part etc. and then the number.
I think I looked a while back and it was about £40, but I managed to find the clip that I had lost from it etc. yes those plastic parts go brittle.

advice: when replacing those hoses, don't slide out the snap rings push hose on and then slide them in .. leave them in, and coat the faces with a small amount of vasalene, and push them on and listen for the ring to snap closed. that way, you know its seated. otherwise, the hose itself, can push off and the coolant floods out.

I seem to remember it's twist lock or clipped together so it might just have popped out and can be put back together (looking at the photo there's a C-clip on the left hand end that holds the thermostat valve and spring in).
