Enertia can be a friend or an enemy. Starting and hills just crush gas mileage. Starting from a stop going up hill the consumption gauge reads in the negative!

Anyone ever googled'hypermiling',if you are interested in keeping good mpg its interesting reading. You could also remove your rear tray, spare wheel and jack and tape over body panel joints and not too much water in the windscreen washers and keep the fuel level low ,drive it like operate the revs with a feather!!! Not forgetting leave the tow ball at home!

DannyH,

Easy! Just switch over to L/100km and 20+ is easily achievable in traffic. Mr. Green

Yep. Im on the Eccomodders site. It is interesting stuff. Most do that stuff for the environment. I do it for the environment of my wallet. But no I am not going to change the looks of the body for such a small improvement that will happen. The biggest bit of info that site provides for our flying bricks is how to work the throttle to out advantage. My first flying brick was a 95 Jeep wrangler with the 4.0 and stick. Went from 16mpg highway to 24+. The magnaflow cat back made no perceivable change. The smaller lighter tires made no real change. The K&N air filter made no change. Removing the Kargo Cage did as with anything dealing with air resistance. 16 to 18 right away. Get into 5th as soon as possible. Engine brake down hill vs coasting. Draft the big trucks or another wrangler when possible.

You only have to look at what the car manufacturers are doing on their ultra low emissions cars.

Skinny tyres, strip all the excess weight out of them, don't fit aircon and make them as aerodynamic as possible.

But all of that can reduce practicality. Most of the low emissions cars (VW Bluemotion etc) have most of the sound insulation stripped out of them to save weight, so they sound cheap and tinny.

I used to drive lorries for a living, all firms went on about was economic driving, because when you have an artic doing 15mpg and a million miles a year it saves them a fortune.
Basically you just want to avoid stopping, harsh braking and acceleration. If you can keep the car rolling at a couple of mile an hour it's better than stopping.
Think about moving a heavy trolley about by yourself. Once you get it moving it's fairly easy, but getting it moving takes a lot of effort.

When I bought the Beast about 6 weeks ago the consumption 1 and consumption 2 was reading 13.5. On my first trip home from the gas station (petrol) I reset consumption 1 and it read 14 when I arrived. Just last night I used the same station and it read 19.9 on the same trip home. Consumption 2 I haven't changed since my first fill up. It reads 17.4. I drive with a lite foot. Slow starts, accelerate down hill and coast up hill. Thumbs Up That said the wife has it this week. Oh you should have heard the beast with the old twin magnaflow pipes. They stayed with the PO because he wanted them for his other 2004. A lovely rumble without being too loud. It was like going from a stock Triumph Speedmaster to one with TORS.

yeah, when i did the steady 65 i just set the cruise, so the car does it it's self.

I think 25mpg (imp) is about as good as it's going to get, but i didn't really buy it for economy, i could have kept my Diesel Jaguar for that (60mpg)

Using Cruise control will normally increase fuel consumption. e.g. If you set it to 65mph when driving on a motorway, the car will often change down a gear or increase revs when you are driving up a gradient or have slowed down for traffic, as it is trying to get back up to 65 as quickly as possible. Switch off cruise control and modulate your throttle manually, allowing the car to slow slightly when you are ascending a gradient. This way is definitely more fuel efficient. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

OK officially broke the real 20 MPG mark with 21.7. So after adjusting for computer error I cleared the 20 MPG US. On my 2k mile trip to Florida it became clear that AC does lower gas mileage on this beast . That and cruise control would drop it about 2mpg. The flatter it got the better the mileage. Duh. I wasn't in the Florida panhandle for enough miles but I'm sure I could break 23mpg on the computer.

On a recent 1100km trip, I averaged 12.7 l/100km (22mpg Imperial/18.5mpg US). I should remove the roof rack. On my P38A, the roof rack increased consumption by about 10%, Ron B. VK2OTC

Im might be able to get 20mpg if I put a block of wood under the throttle. Shocked What doesn't kill you is just bidding it's time.
