as for gps, hence my will to put it behind the plastic grill for better signal.

You could always use a device such as a power magic pro box, that I bought along with my Blackvue. This ensures that the device switches off should the voltage fall below a certain threshold and so not drain the battery! Piggy back fuse off a permanent live supply in any of the fuse boxes. I had that tracker you linked to above several years ago in a vehicle, it wasn't bad but has an internal GPS and phone aerial, this one is much better and it's what I have fitted... signals are much better even with the aerials buried within the car, it has loads of extra features but if you use it as a straightforward tracker you only need a permanent 12v and an earth.

If you are fitting a GPS, it will need clear line of sight to the sky, while you can cover it with the dash board etc, it will not like you much if it has any metal above it, and probably refuse to function. They are normally placed behind the dash below the windscreen, so that it can receive the signal from above without the roof or the bonnet shielding it, Oh and keep it away from speakers
