Confirmed NOT Likely - Head Gasket fault

Hi,

Since Feb I have had the check coolant message..

Into the garage for a check up.. and found no leaks. Temp gauge gets to half way in less than 2 miles....

Been regularly topping up the coolant every day with about 2 1/2 pints of water, whether a small journey or long one.

Picked up the caravan last night from the storage site and did 10 miles back to home, up hills and down hills and put it under a bit of pressure. but (Still running sweet all the way home)

parked it up for a couple of hours whilst I set the caravan up etc....

Here it is....... Got back in and started it up when cold..... Well what a change...

Now running like a bag of spanners.. engine rocking and noisy, put in reverse and violent juddering. put in drive and violent juddering. car gets warm quickly and within minutes the car is running sweet again......

Been back to the garage this morning and they have confirmed that it is likely coolant is leaking into the head and then when burnt off it runs OK...

Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

Thanks Stan,, Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Don't think it is going to be something else...

We thought it was a few weeks back but none of the other tell-tale signs present.....

It is now showing - so at least I can get it sorted before the trip to France in 2 weeks... Bow down Bow down Current Cars

My last car's engine failed due to coolant issues too, though it had not got anything like as bad as yours. I was told my options were:
1. Repair, quite expensive and no guarantee of success;
2. New engine, uneconomic in the context of my car; and
3 New car. That was what I chose.
I hope you find a good solution. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Well... After the shock of it being possibly the head gasket...

The garage had a re think and the result was totally in my favour.... Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Here is a picture of the offending item

On examination and taking the connecting pipes off the coolant was present and poured out of the two holes where it shouldn't..

New one was fitted on Saturday and new 6ltres of coolant added and the Bong and "Check Coolant" warning is no more...

Well pleased Now - Has trip to France this Friday towing the tin tent was looking very doubtful..

- Its an EGR Cooler....
