Advisorys from inspection

Took mine in today for the break recall & got a call to say that's all done sir. Thumbs Up

Then the bomb shells Censored

2 advisorys Censored Censored

1) oil leak from turbo return(?) it's not not the part it's the 8 hours labour sir ££££ Shocked I explained they have already done 2 leaks in this area as previously had an oil cooler & pipes before & surely warranty? Turns out there's an outstanding bulletin for it so done again free either way.

2) front disks below serviceable level?? Done 6k since buying used approved, surely can't have done a set of disks from approved used level to unserviceable in 6k?
They are asking the question but cross yer fingers for me folks... 2011 (MY12) 4.4 TDV8 Vogue

It depends how hard you are on your brakes. Estimating how much life is left in brake discs isn't an exact science, they may well have been sound when it was sold to you.

I thought you measured the thickness of brake discs in order to determine their suitability for use.
Minimum disc thickness is specified by manufacturers.
Discs are either above the minimum thickness or not.
You have the choice of replacing them earlier but if they are down to minimum specified thickness or below they should be replaced.

exactly, but they may well have been above the minimum thickness 6000 miles ago when the car was sold, estimating how much longer they would last before going below the minimum isn't an exact science.

I'd have thought approved used would still have a reasonable amount of service left in them. It's not the end of the world just didn't expect to be replacing breaks already.

PaulB - ouch!!! Thank Censored I have a warranty, wouldn't wish a quote like that on anyone. 2011 (MY12) 4.4 TDV8 Vogue

Just found another thread where Ryan quotes the disks must be less than 50% worn, so disks every 12k seems very short service life? 2011 (MY12) 4.4 TDV8 Vogue

Well that's my point it's difficult to estimate the service life left in them. The technician basically just has to make a guess, they may well have seemed like they had a reasonable amount of life left in them.

They are hard on their brakes, it's a 3 ton car before you tow anything, and being an automatic they work the brakes harder than a manual box would. It also depends how you drive.

Fair points zirconblue. don't really charge round in it, blow cobwebs out on motorway each week but mainly A/B roads daily.
Have to see what they come back with & what will be, will be Thumbs Up 2011 (MY12) 4.4 TDV8 Vogue

I took my BMW in for a recall - and they gave me an estimate of £3K for "other items" which they suggested I had done:
Break pads all round
front disks
2 tyres
2 lower arms
back box
Handy to have a list of items, just done it myself for around £500!!! Thumbs Up

When I bought my L322 three years ago, I was advised that the brakes would need doing 'soon.'

I just had them done a few weeks ago as they were approaching the limit (but had not yet gone over it). That a good, long time from the first warning.

That's the way i look at them, it's a handy list of jobs to do. And you can judge whether it's worth doing yourself, taking elsewhere or just getting them to do it based on the price.
