It depends how hard you are on your brakes. Estimating how much life is left in brake discs isn't an exact science, they may well have been sound when it was sold to you. |

I thought you measured the thickness of brake discs in order to determine their suitability for use.

exactly, but they may well have been above the minimum thickness 6000 miles ago when the car was sold, estimating how much longer they would last before going below the minimum isn't an exact science. |

I'd have thought approved used would still have a reasonable amount of service left in them. It's not the end of the world just didn't expect to be replacing breaks already.

Just found another thread where Ryan quotes the disks must be less than 50% worn, so disks every 12k seems very short service life? 2011 (MY12) 4.4 TDV8 Vogue

Well that's my point it's difficult to estimate the service life left in them. The technician basically just has to make a guess, they may well have seemed like they had a reasonable amount of life left in them.

Fair points zirconblue. don't really charge round in it, blow cobwebs out on motorway each week but mainly A/B roads daily.

I took my BMW in for a recall - and they gave me an estimate of £3K for "other items" which they suggested I had done:

When I bought my L322 three years ago, I was advised that the brakes would need doing 'soon.'

That's the way i look at them, it's a handy list of jobs to do. And you can judge whether it's worth doing yourself, taking elsewhere or just getting them to do it based on the price. |
