Terrain response - when should the Auto kick in?

I drove my L405 on a grass field yesterday and there was plenty of grip, but it got me wondering when the Auto Terrain response would kick in? Is it typically when the car senses a loss of grip in the standard mode?

In my old L322 I'd often change the terrain response according to conditions, rather than wait for there to be a problem, so just wondered whether it might sometimes be better to preempt the Auto setting and select a setting manually? 2024 Range Rover P550e AB

I would play around with it for a bit so see if the auto setting is sensitive enough for your liking. I would also be inclined to change the settings myself than wait for problems but on the other hand, from what I understand the engineers are JLR have done a really good job on this. Although there are some members on the forum complaining about some funny stuff going on in the auto setting that makes the car a bit less comfortable in "normal mode". MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

It's very sensitive and probably had switched itself to Grass/Gravel/Snow without you even noticing (the display does not tell you in Auto mode). The only way to tell would be to take it out of Auto and seeing what was displayed.

I know it's sensitive because the entrance of my drive is on a slope and when I get to the top and open the door, most of the time my side steps will not deploy. The car puts me in 'Mud-Ruts' and consequently the steps won't deploy.
