United Kingdom 2002 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Adriatic Blue
Odd Range Rover Interior

Hi,

Current Td6 owner, gearbox is out and away to be refurbed just today.

Killed it towing a trailer with 3ton behind it.
Decided the chocolate td6 gearbox probably isn't the best for towing 3ton at least twice a month for 600+ miles.

Thinking of getting a early tdv8 for the £12-£13k mark.
Presume the gearbox shouldn't be a worry with these.

Been browsing autotrader as you do, last week or so I believe I saw a darkish brown/tan colour.

Might not have been a Range Rover tdv8 but it really stood out as a nice colour.
Was a vented seat from what I remember. Anyone know what this was?

Thanks

A TDV8 for that sort of money is bound to be a high-miler. LR don't seem to think the gearbox needs servicing but many on here, and the gearbox manufacturers themselves, disagree.

Form what I have gleaned you need to make sure the 'box has had a full flush (not just an oil change) and this should be in multiples of 70k miles as an absolute minimum. I had mine done at approx' 50k.

Good luck with your search. I love the TDV8 and I'm forever towing silly weights with it that it just doesn't notice Thumbs Up

Was it not the td6 that mostly had gearbox problems?
Yeh I'm expecting 100-130k miles on it roughly, used to high mileage cars.

I believe the TD6 'box was actually made from spreadable margarine - whereas the TDV8 'box (same as Disco 3) was uprated to the level of original butter Very Happy

The advantage being that as long as you keep it in the fridge (euphemism for flushing the oil regularly) it remains pretty solid Thumbs Up It certainly isn't a bad 'box as long as it's looked after.

I seem to think the X5 (same 'box) has a service interval of 70k for regular use but LR stick to their guns, ignore the manufacturer and say it's filled for life. Bless 'em.

X5 box is sealed for life like all modern BMWs. 5 speed GM auto more prone to failure than later 6 speed auto

2015 Range Rover Vogue SE SDV8 Barolo Black

The td6 box was (is) woefully poor, the poorest point of the whole package unfortunately.

It's a French zf unit that was never really designed to be sealed for life as Land Rover advertised.

The early tdv8 is a ford unit which is much more reliable, but like any auto box lugging around 2.5 tons and shifting through 650Nm of torque there are always going to be issues.

As ever use is a big factor, so be cautious of units that have done a lot of towing etc. __________________
