Here you go Craig. Probably been re-shelled or wrongly listed as Cat B. Could be a C. (Typo?)

Category A: scrap only. For cars so badly damaged they should be crushed and never re-appear on the road. Even salvageable parts must be destroyed.

Category B: body shell should be crushed. Signifies extensive damage, although some parts are salvageable. Should never re-appear on road, although reclaimed parts can be used in other road-going vehicles.

Category C: the vehicle is repairable but the costs exceed the vehicle’s value. Can re-appear on road.

Category D: the vehicle is repairable but repair costs are significant compared to the vehicle value – including time delays to source parts. Can re-appear on road.

Genuine cat B cars are only available to a licensed breaker for parts only.

Steve9bug is correct, cat b are only sold by auction or pre existing arrangement to a licenced vehicle breaker and should never be back on the road. For most b's the excersise itself would be piontless due to the level of damage. Only certain parts can be re-sold. More than likely a cat c or a category u which would be sold auctioned as a c anyways.

I am not a cab b licencensed breaker but am a specialist subaru breaker and use the cat system when buying from insurance auctions in the uk

cat B - can be put back on the road , as long as they pass a vic test (I know this is for cat c)

It is unusual to be put back to normal use and will most likely be very hard to insure , but nothing ILLEGAL about it.


the insurance bureau says cat b - should be broken for parts - not shall - thats where the ambiguity arises.

one to avoid anyway and not worth the grief I'd say.

Cat A - Instant crush. No parts allowed to be dismantled.

Cat B - Not allowed on road. Parts only. From DVLA perspective, the vehicle doesn't exist any more.

Cat C - Major damaged/repaired. Allowed in road after extensive exam from VOSA. Note made in logbook.

Cat D - Minor damaged/repaired, or stolen/recovered. No note on logbook but will show up on a HPI check.

Cat F - Fire damage. Not sure whether repaired, or ins company just sold off. Can return to road after VOSA exam.

At first I would say typo, but looking at the advert, I think something is a bit funny with that. I mean, for a £45,000 car, there's a distinct lack of information about anything.

If it was from the ship load which were lost, maybe it was not accident damage which wrote it off, possibly written off wholesale by the insurance company along with a load of others with water and minor panel damage.

in which case it may explain how it could have gotten a Vosa ticket. Because it shouldn't be able to get one if the assessors declare it cat B from my understanding. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I have personally bought and repaired a lot of salvage over a long period of time. I have always understood to buy cat B vehicles the buyer needs to be a registered End of Life Vehicle dismantler with ELV centre number. I have bought these vehicles for break only purposes and before they left the yard the chassis number was removed and photographic evidence taken to stop any attempt at re registration. The centre I bought these cat B from informed me any vehicle appearing back on the road results in the buyer losing the ELV licence, which sounds like it would make sense to me. Just my experience but it does make you curious.
