TDV8 mileage

Hi it's been a short while since I replaced our FFRR with a Jag XF, and it does what it says it should very well, but as good as it is I would like to go back to a FFRR, my problem is that I am going to take a fair hit on the Jag having bought from the main dealer with very low mileage, so my question is what are anyone's thoughts on TDV8 mileage at around 70k and again at say 100k

For the most part, I'd say mileage is less relevant on a diesel than a petrol, more relevant is how it's been treated and looked after.. The engine itself will barely be run in at 70k, or even 100k, but if it's been driven hard or abusively, the turbo may have something to say.. Mines on 91k (07/56 plate), and it's still going very well..

At 70k you could be looking at

Possible Alternator failure
Probable top Turbo hose failure
Gearbox service if not done
Diff services and transfer box
Will probably need brake fluid change
Start of wear to ball joints if driven on country roads or in town for most of life

But none of those is a tricky job. Turbo failure is always the worry, however this is quite rare in comparison to how many there are out there, a motorway car will be better obviously. At 100k there isn't anything specific to look out for, but it is definitely buy on condition and service history rather than mileage. Lots of history on a motorway car with 100k in good nick would trump 70k on a slightly shabby example with a sketchy history any day of the week. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

It seems to make around 3 to 4k difference for the extra mileage, could it be going over "100,000" is a psychological barrier.

I went to see a 70000 miler at a main dealer (not LR ) and after insisting on a test drive of the Jag before a giving a px figure they then refused a test drive of the ffrr and said they would call the following day, heard nothing

I bought mine 3 years ago at 70k, it has now done 108k

I replaced on lower arm for £50 immediately after buying

I replaced the top turbo hoses at about 95k after one split - £80

I had the gearbox serviced at the same time (oil was in good condition) - £450

I have just had the diffs and transfer box oil replaced - £150

Never had any issues with it and fully expect it to go on to 200k before it gets replaced (I have young kids, they will be old enough to go in a nice car then without trashing it!) 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

As my missus keeps trying to tell me. I scrutinise cars, as an enthusiast! Where as 99% of people just buy cars and drive them. I should listen to her....instead of following perfection. Maybe I would sleep better.!

I've just bought an 08 plate one with 140,000 miles on it. Normally, this would scare me silly however, it's got excellent history and appears to have been cared for. Thanks to some sensible advice off here, I went and bought it. Beautiful car and has considerably altered my view on high miles cars. It was also considerably cheaper than any below the magic 100,000 barrier.

A TDV8 with 140,000 miles on the clock with good evidence of being looked after would not worry me in the slightest!

However a TDV8 with 70,000 on the clock will need an alternator within 15k that's for sure!

I have always run vehicles with high mileage as I have tended to do a lot of miles myself due to the job.
But as long as their is clear evidence (receipts, servicing records) the I dont tend to worry as it shows that the previous owner(s) were prepared to look after it regardless of cost. You also tend to save a few quid on the purchase price which will cover any eventual repairs that you may need to do in the future.

I am about (tomorrow) to look at a MY07 FFRR Vogue on 138000 miles, but it comes with full service and lots of receipts for additional work. Also the owner will be putting in for a health check to make sure it has no outstanding issues before it is sold. This is clear demonstration that the FFRR has and is looked after without worrying about the money.
This just wants me to get there and bring it home, subject to it meeting my needs and expectations.

Basically the same as archermav above.

Alternators, starters, hoses, gearbox services etc don't worry me, it is turbos and egr problems that worry me, not just because of the cost, although from what I've heard that can be considerable, but also the reliability, if they go away from your local area, you are at the mercy of whoever to get the vehicle fixed at their price.

I should say that the reason I sold the FFRR was that we were about to drive to southern Spain and Portugal and it was the fear of reliability in a 11 year old motor and I could be in a similar situation again if I'm not careful.

Perhaps I ought to just grow a pair and take a leaf out of archermav (i take my hat off to you )

Then in my very humble opinion, a TDV8 at this age and mileage is not for you. Would a 4.4 AJV8 or 4.2 SC petrol be out of the question?

When you factor in the lower purchase price against the additional fuel consumption plus eliminating the turbo concerns and the overall cost of ownership may be closer than you think? 2006 4.2 SC

I'm glad I did. I was originally looking for a petrol FF. I just could not find one with the colour scheme I wanted. I'd been looking for months and almost compromised on one. I was about to give up the search when this one popped up on ebay.

Like you, I was concerned re EGR valves/turbos and I cannot get a warranty due to the mileage. But, I accepted the small risk and will do my bit to try and prevent it happening (use the car manly for motorways/regular oil changes,super power diesel etc). Ultimately, and I am in no way well off, if it goes then I fix it. Mind, I've got a ducati 998 in the garage and I've had to adopt a similar outlook for that. Embarassed Laughing

Australia 2008 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Atacama Sand

My 08MY tdv8 had 230,000km on it when I bought it with a fantastic service history and was in great condition. After 10,000 the tranny output shaft spline and transfer box input gear spline wore to the point where I lost drive. The tranny was performing great until this point. I blame Land Rover for this failure as the spline was dry and rusted as it had no lubrication applied when assembled. I had the used replacement L322 tranny and transfer box separated to apply lubrication to the output shaft spline. The output shaft spline was already lubricated. So I was just unlucky I think. Although LRPhil has come across others with the same problem.

So other than the output shaft spline failure, the L322 has been great at 240,000 km. ______________________________
