Diagnostic Tool

Im very interested in anyones personal experience using a diagnostic tool on their Range Rover.

ie Cost of unit / how user friendly
1/ What it can scan for
2/ Display fault and location
3/ Clear service reminders, and error codes when fixed.
4/ Calibrate air suspension (big plus)

The one that has attracted me so far is the Bearmach Hawkeye Pro Diagonostic Tool BA5082.

Thanks

I looked at them all then went with the IID tool from the site sponsor on here Gap Diagnostic

Excellent backup from them, the tool does everything JLR can do and more and is easy to use...

Another site sponsor, Dan at Duckworths sells them at a good price.... Pete

I got an IcarSoft 910 Christmas. It does what it says on the tin i.e. reads and clears codes plus gives a whole range of feedback on various systems etc. What I would say however is it is not very intuitive in that all it offers are ranges of numbers and very little in the way of text about the info it is displaying. Then again it was less than £100.00 so not complaining.

I suspect if you are a suitably qualified user then this is not an issue but to the average competent DIY'er I would have liked a better interface.

I'm hearing a lot of good stuff about the GAP tools. Thumbs Up 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus

The IID is a very popular tool. We have just had a Group Buy on them on the D3 forum, and had 34 takers Thumbs Up

They are also usually linked to one VIN number - this is what puts me off.

By the time I might need one of these during my ownership of the vehicle it's probably creeping towards the types of mileage where I am soon to move it on and get something younger and newer, so to have an IID tool (circa £400) which is locked to that car seems a waste of money, as I won't get to use it much.

I think you can have another VIN unlock for about £60 if memory serves me right, but even so, it's a lot of cash to fork out.

What good is it anyway to be able to read codes off, identify a (potential) issue only to have to pay a garage to do the same and fix it? They won't fix something without doing their own investigation. unless you are handy with spanners and plan to do the work yourself I see little point in them.

Thanks everyone,

I did go and look at the Gap Diagnostics web site, it looks a neat piece of kit, I like the idea that it plugs into the diagnostic port and uses the screen display.

Certainly a lot cheaper than the Hawkeye one, has anyone calibrated their suspension height settings with it or with what?.

I prefer hard wired diagnostics, wi-fi etc is fine but if there is a comms drop out ??.

My other car is a Octy mk1 Vrs and I bought the VAG-Com cd disc + lead for £300. It does all VAG based vehicles upto 09', and i do all my own servicing on it.

RRUK lol you have made a very valid point, crawling around underneath is not for everyone.
I did all the work on my RR Classic, polybushed suspension, stainless exhaust, replaced both diffs prop shafts coils / shocks, petrol tank and pump etc, was finally beaten by the dreaded rust, still got 20 years happy motoring in it.

I dont mind rolling my sleeves up and getting up close and personal with the old girl (the car that is Smile )

Cheers

I have calibrated my EAS with it, it also has the possibility of saving three different settings for the EAS I use one for road use and another for off road where standard height is the "normal" off road height and off road height is even higher..

You can use ANY IID tool on ANY vehicle they make it for to read and clear fault codes, the only thing that is VIN locked is modifications to the CCF file....

If you fix your own car then you can go through all the live values and get an understanding how the car works which helps greatly when you do have problems...

Personally I couldn't live without it now, there again mine never goes to a garage....

It's £270 incl VAT for the non BT tool, so pretty cheap really....

Thanks Haylands,

Im still feeling my way round the new car, sorry dont understand what the following means:- CFF file.

Does the scan tool show the intended max/min values for certain settings.

By the way i like your car colour, my old one was Lincoln Green with colour matched mould around the rear window rubbers.

Cheers

Also Peter Thumbs Up

CCF = Car Configuration File

ie. it lets you change settings on your vehicle by editing it. So for example if you want to add tow bar electrics

They are a long list of files that you change to suit your needs, from lazy locking, TPMS, fold in mirrors, auto locking, what lights come on with get you home lights etc etc... very handy to get your FF just how you want it.... The dealers will charge you an arm and a leg just to change one....

You have to be very careful when editing this file as if it's not done correctly and gets corrupted you are in trouble, GAP have got it sorted and the IID does it without trouble, some others have left people with a very big FF sized paperweight...!!!

The live values show you what the sensors are telling all the ECU's if you get to know what these readings are when the FF is running correctly you can diagnose faults much easier...

The Gap lads will always help if you come across something unusual, and they have always replied very quickly when I have had issues with the FF, not had any issues with the tool though....

Thumbs Up Pete

If you get a 2010 MY car you can only use the newer Bluetooth model which is about £400.

And, all those ccf items can be done without the tool anyway, through the dash menu. Discovery 4 HSE

I hope you never need one but I doubt that's going to happen....

Trouble is you will want one on a Friday night when you have a hard fault that won't clear and your going away for the weekend, you'll then pay £250 for some out of hours mechanic to clear the fault and you still won't have one....

Just saying..... Thumbs Up Pete
