The mileage allowed is actually 10,000pa see the pre-penultimate term

Ultimately, you can probably come up with a rationale to support your decision either way


I suppose a few things to think about;

- life is very short and you are only here once.

- if you can borrow money at 3%, there are many area's in the country where property is rising at circa 8%, plus monthly margin on tenants, so your "cash" is better being put to work, rather than being in a depreciating asset. I used to be very anti PCP arrangements, but now we have one of our cars on this type of agreement.

- which ever way you do it, you can't second guess the "black art" of depreciation, so don't try - just accept you will "do in" a lot of money, but you will no doubt enjoy the car.

Have to say, that deal would tempt me, and I am a Yorkshireman

I have a couple of local dealers seeing if they can match the 3% APR finance package. I guess this is funded from their margin on the car. Would probably also factory order to get the spec I want. If the figures don't stack up, I'll park the idea for a year and then look again. Meanwhile I would live with the RRS.

My mistake. I glanced at the screenshots that pld118 had posted and saw the mention of excess miles and 4,999.

10k per annum still isn't *that* much if you use it daily. Our SC is a weekend toy that isn't used very often and has still covered nearly 6k miles this year.

I think the monthly cost of £1300 calculated above illustrates the folly of buying a new car and keeping it for only two years, thus suffering the very worst of the depreciation.

I have my 5th FFRR on order. My experience is to keep them for 5-6 years when they have done around 75,000 miles and then use the trade in as a deposit on the replacement.

Also you can rig the PCP to reduce the balloon payment by asking for a quote based on an unrealistically high mileage. This reduces the total finance cost as well. ( But obviously increases the monthly payments) Then refinance the balloon with a cheap loan from Sainsbury's bank to end when the FFRR is due for change.

You beat me to it. Used L405s have been quite rare, so prices have stayed strong. Supply is only going to increase.

I own my stuff outright and it makes life much easier. If your bought a semi decent 5.0 or 4.4 l322 for your £20k it would easily have more than £10k value in 5years IMO. On the other hand sticking that into finance there is just no chance.

Except for houses, where it isn't too practical (and they tend to appreciate) that's excellent advice.

I take a different view.

Cars are consumable items. Better therefore to pay for them out of income, providing finance costs are reasonable. My experience is that my investment returns have more than covered my finance costs and my approach has been more tax efficient in my particular circumstances.

I would agree that it makes no sense to increase one's mortgage to buy a car as the loan term will not match the life of the car.

So I don't think one can generalise. Financing a vehicle using HP or PCP can make sense but needs to be evaluated against one's own particular circumstances.

MF I agree to a certain extent but generally finance of a vehicle is only worth it just for the warranty in circumstances where a person or family only have the one vehicle and need that security of reliability in such circumstances, and for business's as well. Don't get me wrong new cars still fail but generally at a much lesser rate than older used ones.

IMO a 405 won't lose much money in the next 12monthe if bought used but I think as the 'mini effect' cools off the prices will drop more as I'm sure LR are doing what BMW/mini did when they first launched and controlling used stock levels a fair whack to ramp up demand for the little turds 😄😄 FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
