I heard (millionth hand) that the ride afterwards is horrid and it is not recommended.

Can't see why you would worry about bags breaking, yes they are service items like coil springs but OEM last for at least 8 years and it takes 5 mins to check them to see if they are perished and likely to fail soon, they have a 50,000lb bursting strength so are well strong enough

I have had an air strut fail, but on the dealer's lift rather than in an off road situation ( I think the wheels rather hang off the suspension then, which puts strain on the air bags). My personal experience of air struts off road on 322s (farm tracks and fields/moors, including towing, car up to 9 years old) has been fine, though I have read about 405 air suspension failing on a difficult ground on a comparative road test in Australia.

Well you'd have to notify your insurers regardless, being a modification from standard.

I believe you have all missed a valid point, the OP is referring to a P38 not a 322... |
