As our FFRR are all key-less - how safe are they really ?

The article reads:
The Sunday Times has been waring of flaws in Key-less entry systems since 2011. We revealed how car thieves were buying handheld computer devices, programmed in China and Eastern Europe and sold online, which hacked into a vehicles software and allowed blank key fobs be to programmed.
More manufactures are removing the protection offered by traditional key and ignition barrel and replacing them with a key-less system. This uses radio waves to exchange codes between key and fob and car so owners do not even have to take the key fob out of their pockets.
A HANDFUL OF CROOKS WHO EMPLOYED THE TECHNIQUE IN THE EARLY DAYS CONFINED THEIR EFFORTS TO PRICEY MODELS IN PARTICULAR RANGE ROVERS ......... continues

Myself and others have now resorted to fitting a disklok when parking in public because there is still no sign of a fix for this from LR - new vehicles are still being built and delivered with this flaw

I have read a module could be fitted which only allows 2 keys to be paired and if you lose a key you would need a new module and 2 new keys - this would stop the thefts but no sign of it being done yet  Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

THEY have stopped short of reinventing the wheel but Jaguar Land Rover, the prestigious British-based car manufacturer, may be planning a “reinvention” of the car key.

The automotive firm, which hopes to produce a driverless vehicle within the next decade, has decided to re-evaluate its keyless technology following a spate of thefts of its luxury vehicles by thieves using hi-tech key programming devices.

The thieves use technology similar to that employed by breakdown services to bypass locks, then plug in a gadget that programs a blank keyless fob to enable them to start the engine.

Now, in an effort to combat the crooks, Jaguar Land Rover has filed a patent application in America that suggests it is developing a new security device that will lock and unlock the doors, but not be used to start the vehicle.

However, the reinvention may simply be an old-fashioned metal key that would fit into a lock on the doors, although it might also be a remote key fob or an electronic chip in a mobile phone. The patent gives no indication of when the new key might go into production.

The problems with keyless technology were illustrated in a test conducted last year on a Range Rover Evoque which was reprogrammed in just 10 seconds.

More than 1,000 luxury cars, including Audis and BMWs, were stolen using the technique in London alone last year.

In common with other luxury car manufacturers, Jaguar Land Rover abandoned metal ignition keys because of concerns that they were becoming embedded in the knees and legs of some drivers involved in high-speed collisions.

The Sunday Times first highlighted the vulnerability of keyless systems in 2011 and found last year that the electronic devices used to hack cars’ security systems were available on the internet for as little as £10. Some were even fitted with torches to help thieves work in the dark.

This is old news.... I can't believe people are just finding out about this.

I really don't see the hardship of taking a key out of your pocket and putting it in an ignition. I would never spec keyless if it was an option. Previously..

£120 seems like a bargain for the piece of mind it offers.

Can Lock: “Simple to install” – by an electronics expert, or by an owner with no experience of electronics? Is this a DIY job, or do I need to get it done by a professional? It connects to the can bus wires and a 12v and earth by the looks of it, these are just about anywhere...

It is a very simple and good idea, it just masks the keyless entry ecu from the can bus, if you need a new key, simply remove the power to it and program the key.

What makes it secure is that you hide it in your car somewhere only you will know....

BUT

If you fit an inline switch to the power lead of the OBD port and hide the connections to it and the switch you are doing the same thing.... the OBD port will be useless unless they find the switch....

I suppose a smart thief might guess that power has been removed from the OBD port but are they going to hang around and rewire it or just find another to nick...??

So what happens when you take it to LR for a service? Would you need to disable it?
And if this is such a simple solution, then why are these not being fitted as standard?
