Since the Legend is gone (there are others but not in Johor) I'm now looking at :

The last two are also great, just need to convince SWMBO to sell the X-trail then (worth about 45 to 50k MYR). Rolling with laughter MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

OK the list is reduced :

http://www.carlist.my/used-cars/2279887/19...sedan.html Cheap but just what I need if in good nick. But quite far away from here.

http://www.carlist.my/used-cars/2277710/19...sedan.html Looks nicer than no. 4, going to see it tomorrow.

http://www.carlist.my/used-cars/2220162/1997-bmw-5-30.html Really like the looks of this (another bucket list car) seeing it on Thursday, as it is quite close to the Volvo guy as well.

http://www.oto.my/car-for-sale/1013/used-1...320-johor/ Was OK as described above, would only consider if he drops the price substantially. He may so I may give it a shot Smile. Mileage 275k+ kilometers. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Hahahaha yeah they really like their steering wheel covers here. Plenty Gliptone here mate, bought it for the FFRRs but will most certainly do the BMW seats if I do get it.

To be honest, I prefer the Volvo, purely because it is so cheap and I only need it for a short time while the FFRR is being shipped (well first need to go through the import permit approval process and that can take time here). But if it wasn't about money than the BMW is one, the green Merc two, the black Merc three and the Volvo last......... MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

One more test drive to go, the Green Merc tomorrow.

The Volvo S70 surprised me a lot, I think it is in pretty good shape for its age and mileage so a definite contender since also the cheapest by a big margin.

The BMW was great to drive despite its 405600 kms (ad said 200k). Some small niggles but nothing serious wrong as far as I could see and it drove really well. Replacing the front seat covers (no Gliptone clean and conditioning will solve that) plus door cards is 325 GBP and 2 days work. Seeing other work the leather outfit did in a Landcruiser, quality is very good. The paint job is brilliant, really nice metallic purple (relatively recent). Car is completely damage free as far as I can determine. Just too expensive for a 400+k car for sure.

The choice will be hard, the Volvo or the Mercs. The Volvo is good for the short term and should be easy to move due to low price (and I will drop it quite a bit when selling in a few months). But the green Merc with its low mileage might be a good car for longer (and then I need to convince SWMBO to sell the X-trail and she drives the Merc, fat chance I'm afraid).

Anyway, we'll see how it goes. Still don't have my bloody contract, still a lot of meetings meetings meetings at headoffice on how to bloody do the job. At this rate the job is over by the time we start Sad. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Sorry to hear the Honda escaped. I'd vote for the Volvo. It's big, comfy and much cheaper than the others.

Thanks Craig. I agree the Volvo looks best although for now I gave it second place because there is much uncertainty about the camshaft timing belt replacement and this engine in notorious for "eating" them. I'm trying to find out what a replacement belt and tensioner are going to cost because I don't trust them anyway.

So the Merc is now no. 1, provided he comes down in price a lot (and I think he may). Main reason, the car is in very good nick, lowest miles of the three only some small niggles and it is a 1996-1998 facelift so better than the rest. If for whatever reason the 5.0 can't come over here and I need to keep the car a bit longer, the Merc is my best shot.

That is the head talking.

The heart says BMW as that was the most fun to drive and despite the high mileage it drove very well (so likely a lot of the suspension components were replaced). However not at this price, they need to come down a lot. I will offer him 10k.

In the meantime, I still don’t have my contract so no buying anything till that is done. And since some of the cars can be sold by the time I do have a contract (this week ?? Next week ?????) I have started to look for alternatives in KL (bigger choice and lower prices). Will keep y’all posted Laughing MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Those mercs that are pre 98 I think, have the straight six engine. Later had the better v6. The inline 6 do go on forever, but they do throw the head gasket, do make sure it's been done. Post 99 mercs have had paint issues, across whole range, they switched to very thin water based paint, and many cars went rusty very quickly, only warranted if full servicing done. Early mercs look ace, and a well cared for one is peanuts. In UK.
You do want leather and AC though.
Part prices for Hondas are very expensive, and take time to order in in UK. Pattern service parts are available of course.

Hi John, yes, it is definitely a straight six with 275k kilometers on it. This one has been resprayed maybe the Malaysian sun because it looks perfectly straight and no rust whatsoever. Does of course have AC (and it works well) and leather !!.

The only thing is the Volvo, I'm worried about the timing belt so basically I will just replace it. Cost is around 1200 MYR (300 belt (and tensioner roller I hope) and 900 for labour) so about 215 GBP. I think it is worth it but now the price is creeping very close to what I think I can get it. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
