The quick release is probably more secure in terms of theft prevention, as it locks onto the car. Whereas the farmers one with the pin needs a lump of chain and a padlock to stop someone just pulling up with another range rover and taking the complete hitch and trailer with them....

Not really - the 'quick release' Swan neck unit still has 1 bolt through the armature in the same place that the farmers one has a pin or bolt.

It gives the illusion of security, but in reality is exactly the same - one bolt and you're away......

It depends which farmers hitch you compare it to.

If you compare it to the farmers hitch with the pin and r-clip then it's way more secure, it's not as if you can just undo the rather substantial and probably rusty bolt in 2 seconds. It would take time and not so practical in a motorway services. On the other hand the farmers hitch with the pin and clip is just as quick to remove is the 'quick' release part.

If you compare it to the farmers hitch with the nut and bolt fitting, then it's no more difficult to steal the quick release, but it takes a lot longer to remove the hitch from the car when you're not towing.

If they want to nick your trailer though they'll nick it. They could just turn up with a gas axe or large petrol disc cutter chop the towbar off or chop though the tow head on the trailer then winch it up onto another trailer. It's impossible to make something theft proof, but making things more secure is simply measured in how long it takes them to break it and how much noise they'd need make doing it.

I guess that ultimately, the Farmers - like 50% of the towbars in the UK can have the tow ball removed by the 2 bolts - and then reconnected to any other vehicle designed to take a standard EU tow ball.....

Agree that all you can realistically do is slow them down

Whenever I do an overnight stop with a trailer, it gets backed right into a corner - or at a minimum right against a wall Thumbs Up

exactly, it's a question of making it worth their while for them to go and find easier pickings.

If they want it they will get it. The lock won't make any difference they will quite easily get through pretty much any hitch lock.

The only locks I use on the caravan are the alko wheel locks when on site. Now have a system for fitting to a twin axle. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
