What should the charging voltage be with engine running?

Hi, i noticed today my range rover battery voltage is 13.7v with the engine running and doesnt go over that. Is this on the low side? I checked my van and that has a new alternator and charges at 14.3v.
Im wondering now if this could be the cause of my occasional trans safe fail message? the battery is new on the RR.

What does yours read with the engine running guys? thanks

14v ish at idle. 14.4v @ 2k RPM.

Put everything electric on and dial up 2k revs and should be at least 14.2v+ But not more than 14.5v

How does your behave at 2k RPM and with various loads?

If it's low, it is indeed a TFSP warning possibility. 2006 4.2 SC

Hi, thanks for this great advice. I went out and did what you said and put all electrics on then held her at 2k revs for a while. The voltage still didnt go above 13.7v.

I have also noticed at night time the battery light is on but is very very dim you can hardly see it.

Does it sound like my alternator isnt working correctly do you think? Thanks in advance.

Had the same symptoms myself. It is worth checking and double checking all the connections but I suspect a new alternator will do the job. I suspect it's the regulator that is at fault but as I couldn't find anyone to repair this alone, I had the buy the whole alternator.

TD6 one is not too expensive (compared to the BMW 4.4 V8 water cooled one at any rate) and fitting wasn't too bad.

My 5p. Good luck with it. Thumbs Up 2006 4.2 SC

Thanks mate thats good to know, i had a look online and it seems a new one is around £120 so not bad at all. Did you fit yours yourself, how hard was it if so? the viscous fan has been removed on mine so i dont have that to contend with atleast Laughing

Interesting thread.

Do likely voltages vary with models? Out of interest i did the switch on / 2 k revs thing with mine...

13.95V with everything on and 2k, then 14.0 at idle with nothing switched on, and 14.0 at 2k with nothing switched on. In other words 14 whatever is happening (give or take a nats whisker).

Is this abnormal?
