Towing electrics

Mods, please move if in the wrong section!

Just been reading the manual and it says that my car should level itself when my caravan is attached? Mine doesn't which maybe means that I need to change the towbar electrics to genuine Land Rover?

Can anyone give me any pointers??

Thanks in advance

Sorry, not much use, but I have the genuine electrics and I thought the correct operation was to _stop_ the suspension from trying to self level when a trailer was attached?

^That's what mine does which I also understand to be the correct result to avoid unwanted height changes when towing. John

It's for safety as the default ride height (as I understood it) changes at speed. If your towing something more than a small trailer I'd play it safe and get the correct wiring Thumbs Up Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

As it stands the car wont know it has a trailer attached without the dedicated wiring, either after market or Land-Rover. If you're using generic bypass relays that's your problem. The proper wiring will tell the car you have a trailer attached, it will modify the way the suspension works as well as change the way other systems react, gearbox, ABS, traction control etc.

It should still lift the back up i think, because it's just like loading the boot up. Have you got the nose weight too high on the caravan? The caravans drawbar will have a weight limit as well as the vertical load on the cars tow hitch. You do see a lot of badly loaded caravans on the motorway....

What it will do is lock the suspension at the standard ride height when a trailer is connected, although it should still level the car to that height providing the weight imposed on it isn't too high. The reasoning for this is if you have a particularly low trailer and raise the suspension to off road height then the back of the trailer could hit the road, it could also affect stability, as if the trailers nose is pointing upwards it has a tendency to try and lift the back of the car if you brake hard. Then you get the opposite if the car lowers its self.

Really? Mine doesn't even though it was configured on the diagnostics and has all genuine towing gear. But I can still lower the thing to aid unhitching etc. And it doesn't lock out off road height either.

What it does do is disable rear park sensors and rear fog lights on the car to prevent glare off the trailer. But beyond that I can't find any other differences.

It's what the handbook says it should do...

Quote:
"TOWING A TRAILER
When the electrical plug for a trailer attachment
is connected to the vehicle socket, the EAS
controller acts as though the inhibit button is
activated. The only height change which is
accepted is a return to standard height, if the
vehicle is not already at standard height. The
standard height indicator light and the inhibit
light are illuminated. Once standard height is
reached, no other ride height change will be
available.
WARNING
If the vehicle is at any ride height other than
standard height, when a trailer is fitted,
trailer weight distribution and balance may be
affected when the vehicle returns to standard
height."

And for the gear change,
Quote:
Electronically selected gearbox modes
A suitable gear change pattern for trailer
towing, hill ascent and high altitude is selected
electronically and retains lower gears for
longer. This feature is enabled to counter
momentum loss caused by more frequent gear
changing, which can occur when climbing hills
or when towing a trailer or caravan. This gear
change pattern is also selected at high altitudes
to combat reduced engine torque.

It should engage the trailer stability programme. Which does all that, and as you pointed out does the PDC and foglight cut out.

The self levelling should work regardless of what electrics you have. It is the same principle if you fill the boot with bags of cement...... The height sensors detect that the back is lower than the front, and increase the pressure to the rear bags to compensate.

The trailer electrics just stop it changing height automatically to motorway height! Which you should not be towing at a speed high enough to trigger in any case.... Rolling Eyes There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

All seems well as it were , I have the correct wiring and modules, the only bit that is missing is that the car has not been programmed to recognise it!!!
It could be that I had a new battery fitted when I first got the car, and maybe it has forgot the settings????

Anyway, booked into the stealers next week to get it sorted along with a couple of recalls!!

Cheers
