2006 Vogue 4.2 supercharged replacing steering rack

Hi all,

Have a couple of questions about the above. There is a significant amount of play and my indy has suggested it a good idea to replace. I am sure the wife smashing through potholes on overly large rims has something to do with it but I digress.

Indy is suggesting that there is a company that do non oem rack for about £900 as Range Rover item is more like double that?

I personally don't like the idea of a non factory rack but I also don't really like the idea 1800 quid before vat and labor on a car that might only be worth 12k.

Just wondering what peoples thoughts were and if anyone had been in a similar position.

Many Thanks in advance for your help.

I assume that you have checked all other "play causing" items such as track rod ends and suspension rubbers ?? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

As well as the track rod ends that can wear and give play, there is a "rack end" each side that has a nylon bearing and they wear as well, the track rod ends and rack ends are very easy to replace and pretty cheap, if they haven't removed these and checked them then they can't check the rest of the rack, any play in the rack, rack ends or track rod ends will show as play unless you strip it down and check, sounds like they are trying to have you over, not saying the rack isn't worn but it's unusual, it's usually the rack ends or track rods....

As has been shown above their price for a non genuine rack is way over priced... Pete

So my guy is saying the 829 option is refurbished rack. As for track rods etc yes they are all being replaced but he says there is still excessive play. FWIW I do trust these guys as I have serviced cars with them for years. They wouldn't do the work unless they thought it needed doing.

The refurbished one is likely to have started life as the genuine article anyway and also the refurb kits will likely have come from ZF as well, but given how relatively simple they are to refurbish that still sounds like a stack load of money, unless that's the all in fitted price of course. One assumes they are including the cost or re-aligning the thing afterwards as well

Given the cost of the one linked above I would baulk at more than 5 or 6 hundred quid TBH. With a decent ramp it's not exactly the most difficult job on the planet. I know you trust these people but there's quite a bit which doesn't add up here. I would definitely get a second opinion, or look at it yourself if you have the technical ability to do so.

BTW, non factory parts can be very good indeed and they are often OEM anyway, just not boxed as LR. Case in point would be Westfalia towbars, Brembo brakes etc.

Completely understand but sadly these guys are a second opinion. There are massive flat spots on the tyres that are less than a year old with less than 1k miles on them. This seems to make sense that something is seriously amiss up front.

I also understand that non oem can be fine but for some reason drawn to a refurbished rack. Ultimately this is my wife and childrens car so as much as I want to save a few quid I really just want it to be completely safe for them.

As mentioned before my wife destroyed the front alloys on a pothole about a year ago and my suspicion is that instead of just fitting new wheels I should have had front suspension checked etc for damage. So my fault in reality.

Appreciate everyone's opinion but for the parts ie 829 for refurbished with 1 year warranty seems like its right. I spoke to duckworth about this as well.

Just bloomin annoying to pay out such a lot for a steering rack.

I have also told my wife who bought the ca\r on the basis that it had 22 inch overfinch wheels that if I get any more tyre or alloy wheel issues that I will be swapping back to original 20 inch supercharged ones.

Thanks again for the help all.

One other thing to check is the connection from the lower steering column to the splined shaft on the steering rack. If the nut on the lower column has become loose (even just by a teeny amount), the column doesnt grip the splined shaft tightly and the resultant movement can show up as steering play, i.e. you can turn the steering wheel left and right by a good amount before the wheels turn. I've read threads on this forum before about this, so do a search first.

Worth checking, as if that's the root cause of the problem, it's a two minute easy and cheap fix.
