I assume that you have checked all other "play causing" items such as track rod ends and suspension rubbers ?? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

As well as the track rod ends that can wear and give play, there is a "rack end" each side that has a nylon bearing and they wear as well, the track rod ends and rack ends are very easy to replace and pretty cheap, if they haven't removed these and checked them then they can't check the rest of the rack, any play in the rack, rack ends or track rod ends will show as play unless you strip it down and check, sounds like they are trying to have you over, not saying the rack isn't worn but it's unusual, it's usually the rack ends or track rods....

So my guy is saying the 829 option is refurbished rack. As for track rods etc yes they are all being replaced but he says there is still excessive play. FWIW I do trust these guys as I have serviced cars with them for years. They wouldn't do the work unless they thought it needed doing. |

The refurbished one is likely to have started life as the genuine article anyway and also the refurb kits will likely have come from ZF as well, but given how relatively simple they are to refurbish that still sounds like a stack load of money, unless that's the all in fitted price of course. One assumes they are including the cost or re-aligning the thing afterwards as well

Completely understand but sadly these guys are a second opinion. There are massive flat spots on the tyres that are less than a year old with less than 1k miles on them. This seems to make sense that something is seriously amiss up front.

One other thing to check is the connection from the lower steering column to the splined shaft on the steering rack. If the nut on the lower column has become loose (even just by a teeny amount), the column doesnt grip the splined shaft tightly and the resultant movement can show up as steering play, i.e. you can turn the steering wheel left and right by a good amount before the wheels turn. I've read threads on this forum before about this, so do a search first.
