BMW or Audi - What do you think?

I need a motorway muncher as I regularly hack up and down to Gloucestershire (at least twice a month ) and often take the dogs, 2 largish ones. Annual mileage approx. 40K.

I am going down the supercharger route with the FF so want to keep the miles down as will be keeping it for a while (current TD6 owned for 8 years),

Anyway have narrowed it down to 5 series diesel estate or A6 diesel avant. Havent included Merc as have had bad experiences with them in the past, I like Audi but fancy a BMW for a change. Looking around 2010/2011 models

Any views/experiences would be most appreciated

Thanks

Rosco

if going for a 5 series , consider the petrol engines , bit less MPG but a whole lot of less expensive things to go wrong V the diesel engines
I had the 525 d touring , fantastic ride , super smooth , great Gbox , very comfortable , however in in the 4 years of owner ship it cost me an absolute fortune. Turbo £1200 , all six injectors over a 12 month period at £150 each , 2 fuel pumps 1 x £800 1x 400 ( car has 3 in total) numerous egr problems , crankcase breathers replaced every 5k miles . And to add insult to injury my economical Diesel returned a poor 24mpg.

wish id gone for the 523 petrol

never liked audis

What about a BMW estate on LPG with an underbody or spare wheel well tank (or tanks to create a bit more range). I know several people that had Beamers for years and loved them, both estates and sedans (all 5 series). MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

5 series estate Thumbs Up Wonderful cars and the petrols really aren't that un-economical nowadys - factor in a lower purchase price and perhaps diesels aren't the way to go.

The only thing in favour of the Audi is the 4wd system - you aren't exactly a stranger to snow and ice Very Happy However, this'll mean you can't use 6" of snow as an excuse for a day off Big Cry

Audi's have just as many problems as BM's do and vice-versa.

Nothing combines the mile crunching ability with great handling like a 5 series!!

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up 5 Series Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Before the RR I had a 2011, 3 litre Audi A6 Quattro S-Line (latest shape / version) - the 245 bhp version - not to be confused with the much more common 204 bhp

In terms of performance it was amazing - ludicrously quick from rest and through the ranges, with obvious amazing low end torque, plus on a run it would achieve 40 mpg, and of course you've got the 4WD with the Quattro.

However, watch out - we have a long legged (failed guide dog) black Labrador, and although the "floor area" of the boot was fine (in-fact big - the VDA figures prove this), the rake on the tailgate was pretty severe, and the dog really didn't like it, particularly on long journeys.

If you've got 2 dog's (and need practical / usable height in terms of space in the boot) I'd definitely take a good look at the rake when you look at them - I think the BMW might be slightly better on this front.

To give me the freedom to drive what I want (large or small, practical or impractical), when the Audi went, we also changed my wife's Golf (her main run around) for a new Passat Estate, so that we had real practicality and load carrying capacity in her car.

Okay, I know they are a bit "reppy" but so too are the A6 and 5 Series to be honest, but it is absolutely superb - it was new at the end of last year and is one of the last of the previous model.

It is loaded with superb technology and gadgets plus all the usual's such as sat nav, leather, Bluetooth streaming for your music, DAB, etc, etc plus it is a hugely practical large boot space, will do 55 mpg on a run, is £20 per year to tax, and has decent performance. The model we have is the 2.0 litre (140 bhp) Exec Style Bluemotion

I honestly think for what you want you want, its worth a look - afterall you have the RR for "high days and holidays" Thumbs Up

If its a toss up between BMW & Audi i personally would go for the Audi derv option every time... Quattro will help you in Scotland with the weather and imho is a far nicer place to sit...

FAR more reliable than the BMW derv option too Thumbs Up

Ceegee, that was a concern of mine - the rake
Will look at passat, not bothered re 'rep' status as in effect I am one Rolling with laughter

Will investigate Daisy Duke more thoroughly when things are quiet Thumbs Up

/\

They also do the Passat with a 170 bhp option, which I suspect goes really well - the boot is nice and "square" at the back, so although it might not look quite as nice as some of the other options out there, it doesn't suffer the same issues for "head height" for the Labrador Thumbs Up

It really is as "cheap as chips" to run and looks quite good too - this model gets the LED DRL's and LED rear lights as well as well as slightly lowered suspension and 18" wheels Thumbs Up
