Sweden 2008 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Alaska White
Starter motor replacement L322 TDV8

The starter on our 2008 TDV8 gave up and just had the 'click'. So I ordered a new starter, part no LR032541. There is a surcharge, so it may be worth sending the old one back.

Difficulty of job, 2 of 5. Time including tea breaks around 3 hours first time.

Tools required. 8 and 10 mm 1/4 sockets with ratchet. 13 mm sockets with 3/8 or 1/2 ratchet and a 17 mm combination spanner. 22 mm for wheel nuts, jack to raising the vechile and support for the raised vehicle.

First, check battery is ok. I did this with jump leads and a known good battery. Starter would still not go.

Loosen but don't remove wheel nuts on front right wheel. Then raise and support vehicle, you will need to get access from below at the right hand side.

Remove FR hand wheel, UK drivers side.

Remove battery negative cable from battery, just bend and put cable aside so it cannot get back and touch the battery connector.

Next remove the engine under shield, just 6 small 10 mm screws.

Next is a heat shield in the rear side of FR wheelarch. Two nuts from the wheel side and two screws from below.

Now you can see the starter with another heat shield on top of it.

Wiggle out the heatshield and you see this.

At the front end of starter you find two plastic caps. Remove the large, can be prised out with a small flat screwdriver. And just pull of the small one which has a cable attached.

With caps off, you can now remove the cable to the solenoid, 8 mm socket.

Use the 17 mm spanner to remove large nut and loosen cable. (NB! Battery cable must be disconnected before touching these cables with a tool!)

Loosen two big screws in the back end of the starter and wiggle it all out. It goes out through the wheelarch, but takes some twisting.

When you get this far, it's fairly easy to reverse the procedures. In with the new and here I have connected a couple of breather hoses to it as well. Fasten the two rear big bolts, these should be tight.

Reconnect the connectors and put back the caps. I wire brushed the cable connectors first. And pay attention to the location tab to get this into the right position before tightening.

Reinstall heat shield.

Reinstall next heatshield.

Reinstall undertray, wheel and last the battery negative cable. Some small spark may occur when you do this.

Hi guys,

bumping an old thread here!

The starter motor on my 4.4 TDv8 went dead and it seems to be the same starter motor as used on the 3.6 TDv8.
Is the procedure of replacement the same too? Or can I expect differences? '17 Range Rover 5.0 Supercharged AB (Sold)

England 2011 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Orkney Grey

I've not changed one on a 3.6, but have on a 4.4. Was told that there is less room and I would have to disconnect the anti roll bar. Managed to do it without disconnecting, but very tight.
A post mortem revealed burnt solenoid contacts. I did measure the voltage at the solenoid when trying to start and only had 9.5V. I believe the cable to the solenoid is in 4 pieces, 2 X 4.0mm & 2 X 2.5mm. I either had a bad connection somewhere or Land rover got their sums wrong when designing the start system!! Anyway, now replaced with a larger cable straight through and no more starting problems. Very Happy

Did the cable come out in 1 piece? or 4 separate bits?
Please can you add any further details of the new cable you fitted.
I presume you replaced it in one continuous lead with no joints?

The cable I replaced was the smaller one from the start relay in the fuse box to the solenoid, too much of a volt drop on it. Spliced a new one in the fuse box near the relay and found a convenient run down to the starter. 2004 TD6 - Gone

Just to add I couldn't get the starter out through the side to the wheel arch, mine came out through the bottom chassis rails.

Just done this on mine following this guide. Quite straight forward, only simple hand tools required plus a lot of patience trying to manoeuvre the motor through the chassis. Engine started instantly afterwards, which made me I realise I have had an issue for some time - sometimes when starting the car previously it would take a while to crank, sometimes it wouldn’t start without turning the ignition off and on, I initially thought it was delayed start waiting for glow plugs due to the cold weather. My dad borrowed the car a couple of weeks ago and said he struggled to start the car but I put that down to him being old and unfamiliar with the car Laughing

Anyway all good now hopefully. It took about 4 hours including twice having to go for more tools - a range of extensions and different length sockets of various sizes are needed to be able get to each nut. 2012 4.4TDV8 AB

Just curious....

Does the start stop function Censored the start motor/shorten life, or shouldn’t I worry? Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc

Having had a starter motor in pieces and seeing first hand how black and pitted the solenoid contacts get in normal non stop/start use they get, I can only presume that they get burned a bit every time they operate.
I would search out Stan’s post to disable it personally.

I tend to switch it off as I start the car, not happy messing with the car as not technically competent.


Interestingly in a BMW I rented in scotland , the start engine button is surrounded by a switch off start stop button so you don’t forget to switch off the function !

Took my old starter to bits out of curiosity and it had the same pitting on the solenoid terminals. The live feed being the main issue. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

Do you have a link for this? Trying to find as much info on changing these as possible. I’m Getting a slight smell of hot plastic on drives of half an hour so. In Shauns posts there is a heat shield on the starter which mine didn’t have. Can’t see it listed on parts sites either. Was this removed at some point? Or not fitted until a certain date? Or maybe my starter has been done before and the shield was not put back! Not sure if one of the cables or the breather is getting warm, or if there is just a bit of oil residue burning off (fingers crossed). 2012 4.4TDV8 AB
