If it is a pre 2005MY and you have no remote, it will blow outside air in, on a timer. Thrilling eh Wink Land Rover Addict

No and no are the answers to those questions David.

You need the remote for the pre heater (if fitted) to work.

Air con compressor needs to be driven by the engine running to work.

You don't need the remote...

But then you must pre-promgram the starting hour.

Has nothing to do with the MY or the remote.

Fuel burning heaters (FBH) were fitted to all diesels to augment the cabin heat as the motors are so stinking efficient that they don't produce enough waste heat to heat the large RR interior properly at colder temps (so there you petrol-heads Razz ). In addition, you could order a pre-heater function at the time of purchase for both the petrol and the diesel models. For the petrol, this meant that a FBH was installed, for the diesel it meant being coded (programed) to work with that function vs. just to augment the cabin heat. Setting the pre-heat function is done via the nav-screen or MID depending on what was fitted to the vehicle. In addition to all of that, a remote was available (not sure if it came 'standard' with the pre-heat option).

Theoretically it should be easy for the dealer to code a diesel for pre-heat function with the diagnostic computer. On the pre 2005MY's, the wiring is there for the remote receiver too (not sure about the later MY's) - so all you need are the pieces (which cost close to €1000 from the dealer...).

The FBH is exactly that - it burns fuel and gets hot, so no AC function. AC need the motor to be on to run the compressor, so the only pre-cooling function avail via the ventilation Thrasher mentioned.

No, the extra energy goes into that distinct sound of a tin of nails being kicked down the street instead, I know which I'd prefer Twisted Evil Land Rover Addict

I know what you mean - as a life long gear head (orisit motörhead?) and Porsche nut I never thought my first turbo would be a diesel... Shocked

Then again I can't say that my TD6 has that diesel rattle at all - except for the first 2-3 times for a second or 2 on accelerating afer a cold start. Otherwise never. And what really convinced me (I might have posted this before) was when my wife calculated about 6-7 yrs ago that with the amount we drive and the 20% less consumption + 20% less diesel cost, we could finance a relatively new diesel RR from the savings alone! Said and done. Another one for the collection (4RR's and 3 non-RR's) Cool

I never thought I would buy a diesel either but I must say the TDV8 is a good car.
Thrasher I know what you mean, mine sounds like a tractor at idle and doesn't have the refinement of the 5L SC which I have driven for a few days.
I'm currently looking to buy a 2011 Range Rover and am hesitating between the new 4.4 TDV8 which has fantastic reviews and the enthusiast's but not so reasonable choice in the form of a 5L SC.
Thrasher would you go for the new 4.4 TDV8 if it doesn't sound like a tractor anymore?
