Pete, first of all thanks for providing me with an interesting read. I plan to follow your steps (raised intake etc) when I get a chance, but the FF is the daily driver so got to fit in around other stuff. Also have the fun of having a TDV8 so slightly different intake setup I think.

With regards to the lakes - I concur - took my FF up there soon after buying it and wrote off two new tyres (General Grabber ATs) above Coniston Water. Just don't have quite the meat of the 265/75R16 BFG KM/2s I had fitted to the Defender. Although the consensus was amongst my group (everyone else was in a Defender) was the FF was far more capable off-road, especially if it had been a little bit narrower. The chap following me couldn't believe how much it can articulate as standard.

Kaj,

If it still has the aluminium box with fins attached then that is a soft start relay, this is the diagram for it

Brown/Green is a permanent 12v supply rated at 80amps
White/Green is an ignition 12v supply rated at 15amps
Black is an earth, should be the same size wire as Brown/Green
White/Blue is the control wire, I used a generic fan controller with a take off from the top hose

I fixed the fan to the rad with cable ties, drilled two holes through the top edge of the radiator in line with the two plastic hooks, and used cable ties to hold them in place. I cut off the top two side hooks as the bottom side mounts are in the same place as two plastic retainers for the original fan shroud I drilled two holes through the fan fixings and used cable ties through the fan shroud and around the plastic lugs on the rad.

I used a meter to find an ignition switched live in the ECU box...

I've yet to get to grips with it on slippery wet grass / mud. Too much weight and not enough tread but then I do have ATs on rather than than those fitted to the Defender...

Having had a look under it in the pit last night I seem to have demolished the skid plate underneath the sump so maybe time to invest in a bash plate. Might ask the local trailer company if they can build one - knowing their workmanship it will be a damn sight cheaper, easier to source and better quality than most available.

Went for it's MOT today, had it nearly a year now and done 16,000 miles in it, taken it swimming and mountain climbing, driven it like an old granny and sometimes like I stole it....

First job was to fix the handbrake that hasn't worked in all the time I've had it, and can't believe it worked for it's last MOT looking at the state of it...

Back plates had some serious holes in them as well and the brake pipes are starting to suffer with the tin worm, just changed the discs, pads and shoes today, will change the back plates and brake pipes when it gets a bit warmer...!!!

It then passed no problem.. Very Happy Very Happy

So in the last year it's had

Ballpark figure for that lot I recon about �2,500-�3000 that's without labour as I've done the work myself, I don't think that's too bad considering it's condition when I bought it, the miles I've done and the abuse it's been subjected to.....

FF now drives great, is very comfy with it's small wheels and big tyres and for me is an ideal vehicle, smooth and comfy on the road, the best off road vehicle I've had (and I've had loads all extensively modified) and a van when the need arises...

Lots of mods still to do (and a few repairs no doubt!!!) but I need to get me sorted out first.. a few more joints required.... Pete

That's impressive Pete.

More miles than I've done in my diesel in over 3 years.....

I keep thinking I should get a tdv8, like the one Gaz has just posted up Whistle or I'm thinking RS4 or RS6..... Then I get in mine and think it's paid for....and I like it.....

Then I see an older SL500 AMG...... For less than 5k and wonder about having 2 cars again.....

We are never content. The RR tends to be all things to all men (and women).

I need to do the brake line that goes across the back end, so I'm told....

Mine was pretty unstoppable in the snow last week too, and not in a good way.... Got to walking pace and had a hell of a time to pull it up on the ice downhill runs.....

I'd bank on doing the two flexies as well, yours can't be much different to mine and mine are pretty rotten at the joint, don't think they will come apart and be reusable.... Pete

And done another job.... got fed up with looking at this, too tight to spend �120 on a new one....









Took it off, fixed the splits with a bit of plastic welding with a soldering iron, then covered it in vinyl and colour matched it to the seats....

Chex, I don't know mine is full of LPG tank... I would imagine it probably wouldn't, the normal one looks tight enough...

I actually bought the metal to make some sliders about a year ago but haven�t been fit enough to crawl about under the FF, still waiting for the other new hip and then a knee!! Anyway that�s my excuse�

We are off to North Wales this weekend and it is one of the most severe trips we do, you usually get some form of body damage so that�s next weeks job sorted!!! Anyway I thought I�d better get on with them�

I took the sill covers off last year and worked out that 80mm X 40mm X 4mm box section would be a good size for them, the sill is flat from front to back, the mounts for the factory jacking points hang down about 6mm, I wanted support along as much of the sill as possible so decided to fill in between the jacking points with some 6mm X 50mm plate.

Also found surface rust underneath the jacking points and along the seam of the sill









The plan was to weld the 6mm plate to the sills with captive bolts to hold the sliders on, then two supports into the original inboard mounts for the factory running boards.

First job, mark up the box section with the placement of the jacking points then cut the 6mm bar between and pop rivet it to the box section to hold it in place for drilling all the holes.





Then mark up 5 fixing points and three alignment holes and pilot drill all of them.





Offer it up to the car, held up with a trolley jack and clamped to the sill tight up against the protruding sill seam, then drill through all the holes into the sill.

Remove the box section and open out the top fixing holes to 12mm to accept the M10 A2 stainless bolts (I used stainless nuts and bolts throughout) Drill clearance holes in the sill for the bolt heads.

Then open up the bottom holes to 30mm to be able to get a socket on the nuts inside the box, this box section is strong enough to bolt right through without collapsing, but you then have nuts hanging down that get damaged when the sliders come into play.

I then realised that in my current condition there was no way I was going to be able to weld the plate to the sill so called a mate who said he�d do it for me�

I was just going to get him to weld the plate but he had some tree slider bars already bent up from a cancelled order (he makes bumpers etc for Defenders and Disco�s) They were just the right length. I didn't want them too long to cause problems with trees and logs getting stuck between the bars and the front wheel�.


We riveted the plate to the sills with the alignment holes drilled earlier and he soon had the whole lot welded up and bolted on and he tacked on the two supports, I got home and took them off, finished the welding (on a bench) and cleaned them up.

I wanted them galvanised so had to drill drainage holes in the box and the bars to let the zinc get in and out�

Whilst they were being done I managed (just) to clean up the rust on the sills with a wire cup on an angle grinder, I also did the rear arches as they were getting a bit scabby, treated all the rust, seam sealed the plate and stone chipped the lot, including the rear arches as they get a lot of abuse off road, I top coated the arches to match the FF..

There are ten holes down the sill covered with grommets, seemed like a good idea to take them out and inject the box sections with some cavity wax till it ran out of the drain holes

Soon had them bolted back on and the large holes sealed with grommets (see how long they last before they get knocked out??)

They do look rather bling at the moment, it will get darker as it ages and I haven�t decided if I�ll keep them like this or paint them, they�ll do for now� kinda match the wheels!!! Pete
