I have had a quick search but I couldn't find anything definitive, the situation is I have a rounded locking wheel nut not the outer bit but the inner bit. So the outer bit will turn yes, but the inner bit which appears to be made of a softer metal has rounded so everything spins but of course nothing unscrews.

You can buy a socket from Halfords which removes stripped locking nuts but, obviously, it completely wrecks the nut. They have several different sizes though so I would take one of the good ones with you. Worked fine for me one of my Disco 3 wheel nut.

My 2004 model has 'Torx' type lockers but as the example above I believe there is a weakness here,my mate had one he couldn't get off but it was the tool that looked worn as well, after lots of spray and plenty hammer he rang the local dealership to get another tool. While he was there they loaned him their tool to check it was the correct one so he tried it and it came straight off.Maybe the spray /hammer had done the best bit but he then bought a new tool which looked so much better than the old one.By this time the locker didn't look too good with the rear part slightly rounded but to get another he had to buy all 4 which were not cheap at all.I suggested putting some weld on the rounded part and grind square so giving a great new fit.Needless to say we took off all 4 lockers and liberally applied copper grease and not to mad with the wrench,Job done!! |

Geoff, be aware these are made of a VERY hard material and needs drilling with specialist kit to remove them! Speak to an experienced specialist my friend as there are lots of pitfalls with removing them! |

Geoff what sort of wheel nut are we talking about? Is it one with hole in the middle that you put the star key into, in which case I can confirm that they are cr-p. On the bright side there is no way that anyone will nick your wheels, on the down side there is no way you can change your wheels

Just noticed that some bright spark has come up with a locking wheel nut removal kit, I very much doubt that you will be able to get hold of one , BUT, they claim that the RAC and the AA both use them and they do an adapter for Range Rover wheel nuts too

Craig, sneeky, am I correct in assuming that the top spins, would have to lock it up and then drill with a cobalt or boron drill bit, OK I accept that they are not a 2 minute job
