Help with rounded locking wheel nut

I have had a quick search but I couldn't find anything definitive, the situation is I have a rounded locking wheel nut not the outer bit but the inner bit. So the outer bit will turn yes, but the inner bit which appears to be made of a softer metal has rounded so everything spins but of course nothing unscrews.

It started of as such a normal day as well, the stuff arrived to do my calipers but this locking nut says otherwise good job I have time to waste and good job it isn't a puncture by the side of the road. I've put everything back together and torqued up the other 4 nuts so car is drivable but is fixing this DIY or are there specialists I can take it to? Geoff

Try gumtree search locking wheel nut removal. A lot of independent garages offer this service. Polish guy round the corner from me is an expert I have referred several people to him he has them off in seconds. He charges £10 a wheel I think it's well worth it rather than messing with it yourself for hours and possible damaging the wheel.

as you say if you get a puncture then your Censored and if it's not that it's usually the rest of the nuts are so overtightened that they are impossible to get off without a huge bar to jump on because some grease monkey has put them far too tight and not to correct specs . Every time I get a new car that's the first thing I do remove all wheel nuts and locker, get some anti seize on them and put them to the correct torque setting Thumbs Up so many people must get caught out with this at the side of the road when they get a flat ! Range Rover Vogue 2006 4.4 AJV8 | Buckingham Blue | Parchment Leather | Supercharged Grill+Side Vents | CA02 HEY ( NOT 02 PLATE )

You can buy a socket from Halfords which removes stripped locking nuts but, obviously, it completely wrecks the nut. They have several different sizes though so I would take one of the good ones with you. Worked fine for me one of my Disco 3 wheel nut.
I have since abandoned the locking wheel nuts - more trouble than they're worth !! 2017 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography

My 2004 model has 'Torx' type lockers but as the example above I believe there is a weakness here,my mate had one he couldn't get off but it was the tool that looked worn as well, after lots of spray and plenty hammer he rang the local dealership to get another tool. While he was there they loaned him their tool to check it was the correct one so he tried it and it came straight off.Maybe the spray /hammer had done the best bit but he then bought a new tool which looked so much better than the old one.By this time the locker didn't look too good with the rear part slightly rounded but to get another he had to buy all 4 which were not cheap at all.I suggested putting some weld on the rounded part and grind square so giving a great new fit.Needless to say we took off all 4 lockers and liberally applied copper grease and not to mad with the wrench,Job done!!

Geoff, be aware these are made of a VERY hard material and needs drilling with specialist kit to remove them! Speak to an experienced specialist my friend as there are lots of pitfalls with removing them!

Geoff what sort of wheel nut are we talking about? Is it one with hole in the middle that you put the star key into, in which case I can confirm that they are cr-p. On the bright side there is no way that anyone will nick your wheels, on the down side there is no way you can change your wheels Evil or Very Mad
I would find a torks bit or allen bit that's just too big and hammer it in to the wheel nut, then very gently try and undo it. it would probably help if you loosen the other nuts off first. After you've hammered one size in it's easy to go up to the next size if the first starts to slip.

Remember that the key to nackered nuts is a big hammer Shocked Big Cry Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Just noticed that some bright spark has come up with a locking wheel nut removal kit, I very much doubt that you will be able to get hold of one Sad , BUT, they claim that the RAC and the AA both use them Very Happy and they do an adapter for Range Rover wheel nuts too Very Happy
Might be worth a call, could save you a lot of bother, and if your a member (and you'd be mental to have a ffrr with out breakdown cover Wink ) could save you some dosh Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Craig, sneeky, am I correct in assuming that the top spins, would have to lock it up and then drill with a cobalt or boron drill bit, OK I accept that they are not a 2 minute job Thumbs Up

but look, behold the removal kit, with Range Rover adapter
