Read an article the other day that they have a shortfall in road tax due to the increase in low emission cars and one suggestion is that they increase the highest band to £830 per year!

Raising tax/duty revenue seems fundamentally flawed, in that they want to price worst offenders off the road, (like the 2002 diesels into London,) but they still want the same money into the coffers. same with modern mpg figures, means less fuel-ups per car per year. Also, like the congestion charge,(in London) they want the revenue, and slowly increase it, but they don't want you to avoid paying it, ie NOT using your car. if they did they could just put it up to £50 or more! (currently £13 I think)
Similarly, with diesels, they do more to the gallon, so they need less fill-ups, that means less in duty, so they put it up, to cover the shortfall. Again, with the VED tax, they set aside groups of cars like these smart cars, and mini hybrids, so we bought these, and now they want to include then as normal. making us buy 'again'.
I've always argued, that I'm not sure all the smog registered in UK, came from the UK. ie if you monitored on a still day in the English channel, I wonder if that would show high levels blowing around?

I think they will enforce a new MOT requirement, on people with decats, and maybe ecu tunes.
my old disco2 when I took it in, they guy used to just stand this sensor in a cup of warm water from a kettle, (simulating hot engine), and flick a button, with nothing connected to car!
I used to just avert my eyes!

London taxi drivers are about to become the next incarnation of government blunder, when they call all old vehicles off road and force them to use so called hybrids.
but I must say, that if you look into new buses, in London around 5 years old, the pipe is shiny on the inside, meaning no soot.
ive also read that because of modern diesels' ultra fine injection pulsing, under enormous pressure, that the soot is too fine for typical dust separation, like mouth masks, and our bodies, can't extract the soot. so we become walking soot magnets.

its when you travel to cities like Bangkok, that you can really see the smog, and they happyly let everyone ride round on ancient, two stroke mopeds, chucking out tons of shyte.

Working in London, especially, I do notice the rather high volume of older diesel cars that literally belch out soot with gay abandon.

I own one old diesel car (my 110) and my motorhome. Both are over 20 years old and both have had a lot of care in the way they run, so they don't belch out soot but I agree they must still be rather dirty engines to run as neither of them have cats. Luckily, maybe, their annual mileages are so low.

The problem, to me anyway, seems to be the diesel engine is rather sensitive to state of tune and servicing requirements for it to run properly. I know from experience that diesel tuning firms can make the engines far more powerful but pollute a hell of a lot more. This is just poor workmanship and I know can be done better as my 110 proves.

Many of the cars I come across, I suspect, are simply poorly maintained. One option to help them (above servicing them properly) is to LPG inject them. With this change, 20% of the diesel is replaced by LPG, the combustion burn is improved dramatically and emissions are far better. Get it right and power is also improved.

It would be good for the government to take the blame/responsibility for the situation. Many people drive diesels because government taxes make them cheaper. Yes, diesels work great in articulated lorries and trains. In cars, most would prefer the petrol option if the running costs were the same.
Also, rather unfair after the modern motorist who has paid for a very complicated, expensive to repair engine, to now have to pay more again. At least the older engines were easier and cheaper to repair. (What would you rather troubleshoot: a TV8 or a Rover V8 efi?) (easy answer - it will be the Rover's head gasket, AGAIN!) Mr. Green
