Cost of owning a 4.2

Afternoon all was just fiddling about with banking etc and noticed that my mot is due next month so had a little think about how much it has cost to own my 4.2
Bought in late november 2013 with 80k on the clock for 14500 sterling cash with 2 months landrover warranty and 6 months road tax summer and winter wheels and tyres summers contis on 20s winters pirellis on 19s. Drivers heated seat didn't work neither did the fbh both repaired for 1200 quid all up
I replaced the warranty 900 quid
conti tyres 800
New battery 120
new door rubber nearside rear (not sure of cost)
new ball joints on front as damaged during the floods 300 quid
new brakes discs and pads 500 quid
Servicing 800 quid
new gearbox under warranty 30 quid
Car runs like a dream everything works current mileage 116000 so 36k in 17 months
So I don't think that is too bad at all

mmmm.. i'm not sure everyone would agree. but you did do well on the gearbox under warranty. did you just have to buy the guy his lunch, for £30?
your repairs are £4600.
im at the bargain end of ownership. and that totaal, nearly my cars cost!
i'm well aware that you buy these cars, and you use them, and pay for the costs etc.
I do read here, with interest, all the tips on maintaining my car, and do a lot of (all! -so far as a rampless garage allows!) of the maintenance myself, so, i guess i'm unlikely to be at premiership ownership status. and maybe will (hopefully ) never have to stump up that sort of cash etc. (in that period,) so i guess to others contemplating ownership... it's not a typical 'total'.
but the gearbox was probably the dealbreaker....

only my personal 2p worth. not being critical at all.

edit. actually ive just re-read the post, and maybe i should not be so negative. tyres are tyres!

The 30 quid was paid to main dealer as my contribution no idea how that was worked out - to be honest 36k miles the maintenance costs are not bad well to be honest was expecting it to be higher - I also have a p38 and do all the maintenance on that myself but this has had nothing go wrong that I wasn't aware of when I bought it

On 90k miles it started to changed with a real thud on kick down it felt like it was a solenoid giving up apparently it is all sealed so one bit goes and it is a new box. They tried a double flush at a cost of 600 quid to see if that cured it and it made a big difference but it still had harsh gear change on kick down so they credited me with the 600 quid and replaced the gearbox. The dealer was brilliant logged everything and gave me a bill for 30 quid

i dare say it does happen but definitely doesn't come up as much as the td6 and bmw 4.4. out of interest did your car have a tow bar on it when you bought it ? Range Rover Vogue 2006 4.4 AJV8 | Buckingham Blue | Parchment Leather | Supercharged Grill+Side Vents | CA02 HEY ( NOT 02 PLATE )

same here it had never been used for towing . The gearbox was smooth as silk it only went mad on hard driving kick down if I put it in sport mode it was fine so it was a pressure problem I think

You also have to take into account how many members on here have their gearboxes serviced prematurely (compared to JLR suggested service schedule "ahem' Whistle ) That must help many live longer... Thumbs Up

The gearbox thing is an interesting one.

My SC has done nearly 90,000 miles now following a year driving into London almost daily. This routine finishes tomorrow, so the SC will lead a far quieter life for the forseeable future. I enquired about a gearbox oil change at the last service but was strongly recommended to leave it until 100,000 miles as I was told many boxes can be problematic after an oil change. I have no shift problems.

Now I'm only repeating what I've told elsewhere, based upon someone else's experience. But I'm rather tempted to do the oil change anyway, or get it done by a specialist purely because I'm in that middle ground between LR-recommended mileage and enthusiast / specialist experience on here. I was unsure for the same reasons but did a lot of searching online and from what I found 90% of people who have had their 6 speed ZF transmission serviced are very happy and the one or two bad stories I found the box either had problems before the service or they reset gearbox adaptation settings wich tends to seriously mix up the transmission.

I had mine done a few months back it was "hot flushed" and the box is fine. Only improvement is before the service on really cold mornings for the first few moments of driving it seemed to hold gear and the revs would puse under load. It's never done this since the service but I don't know if that may just be down to the fact it's not been as cold. Range Rover Vogue 2006 4.4 AJV8 | Buckingham Blue | Parchment Leather | Supercharged Grill+Side Vents | CA02 HEY ( NOT 02 PLATE )

I'm old school when it comes to fluid and filter changes and my 5.0 is going to get all fluids changed soon, including the transfer box and diffs as well as the brake system. The cost is low compared to having an issue.

By the way, the thud of the gearbox could have been a solenoid as a small amount of the 6 speed ZF boxes (independent of the FFRR as they are installed in many other cars as well) has solenoid issues, including mine. So the thud may have been a cheap change (more than 30 GBP though) of one solenoid and do ATF and filters at the same time. Anyway, great that you got it under warranty !!!! MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

question for original poster.....
im not in a warranty, with my car, but for all others, what was the story with the gearbox, and how 'easy' was it to push it for a warranty claim, being that you renewed the warranty. as per posting, and you got it ('box) replaced. was there a report as to what work was done? and the symptoms, ie a full gearbox recon', or say just the torque converter, -the £30 is neither here nor there, but you could have had a bill for 100 times that to do said gearbox, and i just wondered how you convinced them, that it wasn't (what they may have suggested)' that it might have been the 'way you used it', or servicing irregularities. or not covered as say not original owner. i just hear story after story about large cost warranty 'blame tennis'

as we all know, the range rover gearbox is a sort of unexploded IED, somewhere near your wallet. Evil or Very Mad
