As Stan says that is a generic fault code to indicate something is wrong with the system, it does run from the engine ECU but the fault probably lies in one of the temp sensors, there is one in the thermostat housing and one in the bottom hose... you could try Maxi fuse 61 which is a 50amp, if not it's going to take a bit of testing of the circuit to find the problem... Pete

After the fuse the first test to make is to unplug the fan and see if it's getting 12v, if it is then you know the fan motor is kaput.

The fan has three wires, one 12v, one earth and a control wire from the Engine ECU..... If it's got 12v it could be the fan or the ECU or HEVAC control module or either of the temp sensors... all these have to work to tell he ECU to turn the fan on.... Pete

Agreed, although if the multi meter shows 12v, an earth and presumably either 5v or 12v on the remaining wire it still shows it as the fan being at fault. It also disproves a broken wire leading to the fan.

That would be my first thing to test, electric fans tend not to get used so much during winter and seize up, it's when warmer weather arrives you realise it's not working.

To be able to test power to the trigger wire you will have to ensure that the ECU is calling for the fan to come on, this happens when the engine temp gets very hot, above 110deg C, when the engine driven fan can't cope, it is difficult to get it to come on whilst stationary as the engine fan works so well... when it does come on the voltage at the trigger wire will vary to control the fan speed..... Pete

I know with my Sykes-Pickavant code reader i can manually tell the ECU to run the cooling fan (and other actuators), for doing just such a test.

I've not used the Solus reader, but i would imagine it has the same feature.

It only comes on if the aircon asks for it when it gets hot, can't say I've ever noticed it come on so it doesn't work much....

I'd get to the bottom of that lose wire behind the battery first, that's probably the cause of a few issues..

Don't forget to put the bonnet in service mode first, it's then easy enough to get to.... Pete

Bearing in mind these things are designed to operated everywhere from Scandinavia in winter to the Mohave in summer, it's likely the fan doesn't operate much when it comes to running the AC in the UK.

Do these have a separate speed control module like the Jaguars do?

The ECM controls the speed of the fan, it comes on for the air con and also if the engine fan can't cope.... Pete
