You wouldn't even get that MPG on the back of an AA truck, an 18 tonner (a Range Rover is too heavy for a 7.5ton) only gets about 19mpg max. Laughing

What is a realistic figure for a 4.4 tdv8 on motorways around 70mph?

Don't know about the 4.4 V8 but my 2008 TDV8 has just returned 30.5 mpg on a 720 mile round trip from Cheshire & Penzance in 25 hrs! Cruise control set to 75 mph on the motorway. Left at midnight and arrived Penzance 05.45. Left Penzance 19.30 & home by 0.45. Managed a few hours kip during the day. These vehicles were made for long distance motoring.

That's pretty impressive for the size of vehicle and engine, what sort of MPG do you get with the cruise set to 60? (55/60mph sort of the optimum speed as i understand it, because above that speed aerodynamics start to play a much bigger role)

Drive a 4.4 TDV8 at around 60 mph and you get this. This value arrived after about 20 miles but did go up to 34mpg before I left the M5.

That is still pretty good, it would probably gradually creep up a little further over a longer distance.

It's a shame with the euro drive cycle tests don't include a constant 50mph figure. As small engine cars are generally almost caught up with by much bigger engines on long motorway cruises, because the engine just isn't making much of an effort to keep the car cruising.

My 4.4 TDV8 has averaged 26mpg over the last 4000 miles. This has been checked using the fill fuel tank and reset tacho method; the fuel computer lies and over-reads by 5 mpg.

The majority of the mileage is spent on a motorway on cruise control at between 70-80 mph.

If you sit at 70 and below you can easily achieve a real 30mpg, but around town driving kills economy.

Just had my 3.6 TDV8 carbon cleaned cos I got mates rates at a local garage here.

I didn't do it to get more mpg but just to give the system a good clean. I do 65 miles each way to work and back around the M25 and some A roads. after a week of driving I'm getting 29/31 mpg. I'm sure it used to do 25/28 so a bit better now.

Not sure how long it will last but I do smile when it hits 30 mpg... Smile

(then a colleague laughs at me cos his Audi does 45-50 all the time Big Cry ) Ash

Taking into account diesel is slightly more expensive than petrol, any engine associated repairs are more expensive, the fact that the difference in consumption is nowhere near as most people will think and that it sounds like a tractor ,much more noisy to drive and generally less refined ,why buy a diesel???

I have been averaging between 17 & 18 mpg over the last few months mix of 50 mile commute along lanes, town/residential areas, A roads and fast dual carriageway as well as at least one trip a week in to and around central London and a couple of longer runs. Best was just under 26 mpg but that included a round trip up north to Manchester and back helped by miles of average speed cameras and free flowing traffic.

4.4 AJV8 for comparison. There is a difference between knowing your sh!t and knowing you're sh!t

Are you trying to turn this into one of those very boring Diesel vs. Petrol debates?
