United Kingdom 2004 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Java Black

Are you trying to turn this into one of those very boring Diesel vs. Petrol debates?[/quote]The fact is I drive a diesel van all week and I am fortunate in that I have never done lots of miles in my car as I have never needed it to commute so for that reason I would never concider buying a diesel car.I did not even have any idea what diesels did to the gallon,i just assumed they would average between 30 and 40mpg but my mate bought a diesel vogue and I was shocked what he was getting and my first thoughts were 'its not much cheaper than a petrol'.So unless you are doing a lot of miles, what is the point buying diesel also bearing in mind you buy one to treat yourself and not to worry about fuel costs!!Ps,why did you buy a diesel??

Drive a 4.4 TDV8 at around 60 mph and you get this. This value arrived after about 20 miles but did go up to 34mpg before I left the M5

Good going Thumbs Up

Well that's it (and why i opted for the petrol engine Range Rover), i don't do many miles so for me a diesel wouldn't save a great deal of money. For my Budget i'd only be looking at the frankly inferior TD6 engine. The TDV8 is out of my budget sadly.

However i do personally like the way a diesel delivers it's torque, low down in massive amounts. It's good for pulling power, if you're hauling trailers for example. NVH levels are little different to petrol models on modern units. It's unfair to compare a Diesel van to a diesel car, as even a petrol van is much harsher than it's car counterparts with the same engine, they don't normally bother to put as much sound insulation into them.

Diesels per mile are cheaper, that's why you don't see petrol lorries any more. But if you don't do many miles, the cost savings are either cancelled out or negligible because petrol engined cars are normally cheaper to buy (less demand for them) and they normally have longer service intervals. That's pretty much been the case as long as i can remember, what has changed is the performance of Diesel cars along with their NVH.

Back on subject though, 20mpg from a 2004 4.4V8 petrol yesterday. I want to get a 4 wheel alignment done though, that should help a little.
