United States 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Scotia Grey

3/27/15 - We are at 31 days at the service department out of 63 days of ownership, but I got an update from the service advisor this morning that sounded promising that they might be getting to the true source of the rattle problem.

It seems this time they have isolated the noise to the rear of the RR. They think there is a physical rattle in the speakers (?) that is being picked up by the Meridian Conversation Assist microphones and is being transmitted/amplified throughout the audio system. Hopefully getting closer to a permanent fix.

The manuals are in the RR, so I did some googling and came up with a few press releases with the following information describing Conversation Assist.

Quote:
Conversation Assist, available with the Meridian Reference System, allows the driver
or front seat passenger to talk with ease to passengers in the rear of the car. And vice
versa. Microphones above each seating position reinforce the occupants’ voices via the
audio system, making it much easier for everyone to be heard above any cabin noise.
By comparing the known audio output to the sound picked up by the microphones,
voices are time aligned and processed before being routed to various speakers.

Quote:
Land Rover Meridian Systems

The pinnacle of Meridian in-car technology, the Meridian Signature Reference System available for the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, showcases the stunning 1,700W 3D Surround Sound system with 29 speakers (23 speakers in Range Rover Sport), including a subwoofer. Meridian's Trifield 3D technology, with speakers mounted at roof level, offers the ultimate surround-sound experience.

This top Meridian system also integrates Conversation Assist. Using microphones located above each seating position, this feature channels passengers' voices through the audio system speakers, mixing music and speech volume accordingly, to enable clearer conversation.

The rattle still happens when the audio is turned off, but I wasn't able to find more detailed information on how Conversation Assist is powered or configured. 2015 RR ATB (Scotia Grey w/Cirrus-Ebony)

It should be relatively easy to test by pulling the fuse(s) of the Audio system and then driving it for a bit ?? Or maybe even switch off the Assist bit using the Testbook, I'm assuming / expecting that that is possible. Well unless they find the actual rattle and sort it out once and for all Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

LR is still trying to fix the rattle. No updates since last week.

2015 RR has been in for repairs 36 days out of 68 days of ownership, so I have not had use of my RR for 53% of time owned. 2015 RR ATB (Scotia Grey w/Cirrus-Ebony)

Holy smoke. This is really bad. I wonder if they are even talking to the UK JLR main service department ?? If this is a known problem that would be the place to go and not trying to trial and error it yourself in the US. Do you know whether they actually asked for support/advice from the UK ?? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Back to update on the rattle. I'll link the video of when it first started just in case someone has the same problem and they can hear the sound and read what the latest diagnosis is.
https://youtu.be/ywKAfxkvZdo

April 2, 2015 - Picked up the RR after 4th repair attempt. Car has spent 37 days with service out of 69 days of ownership. They also put 767 miles on the RR as they tested their repairs.

The Field Service Engineer (FSE) returned to continue to try to solve the problem.

Their last repair was based on their diagnosis that the rattle was caused by the Conversation Assist feature found in the 1700 Watt Meridian Signature Reference System. The rear microphone(s) were picking up a rattle in the speaker and amplifying it over the sound system. They removed the rear seats to check all the audio wires. They insulated and secured all the speakers.

During the previous repair attempt, when they replaced the Audio control module (ACM), the rattle went away for 6 days/200 miles, but then started up again behaving in exactly the same way. I've had the RR back for 6 days but haven't done that many miles. Time will tell if they finally found the root cause of the rattle.

Not impressed with LRNA Customer Support and our case with them is still open. The "funny" part is that they sent us a letter of acknowledgement to confirm our last unpleasant conversation and when they cut/pasted our name/address into the letter they left the address of another unhappy customer in the letter. Class act! So we now know there is another very unhappy customer who lives not too far away here in LA ... might just ring their doorbell Laughing 2015 RR ATB (Scotia Grey w/Cirrus-Ebony)

767 miles is ridiculous, I'd be drafting something very strongly-worded to LR North America.

Interestingly Conversation Assist creates some very odd noises through the speaker system on my 1700W system too. Have you tried switching the feature off completely on the touch screen?

Yes, they did press the "off" switch to test, but due to phone, voice commands, warning beeps, navi voice, etc. the audio system is never truly OFF.

They said it was one of the harder problems they have had to diagnose in a long time. It really sounded like something mechanical ... it was in the end, but amplified by the microphone over the speakers. 2015 RR ATB (Scotia Grey w/Cirrus-Ebony)

Thanks for asking. We have all been sick here at home and I'm still taking antibiotics, so haven't done much driving the last 2 weeks.

I did hear what sounded like "one beat" of the rattle a couple of times, but I haven't been able to replicate on demand, so need to do some more testing when feeling better. There is also a friction rattle in the back, after the car warms up, probably from where something was taken apart during the service repairs. Need to get my older son to ride in the back to figure out where it is coming from.

Taking care of myself for a bit and will then take a closer look at the RR issues Smile 2015 RR ATB (Scotia Grey w/Cirrus-Ebony)

Sorry to hear you all got sick, hoping you get better soonest.

Also sorry to hear the FFRR is still presenting you with issues, although it sounds like they did get to the problem but haven't been able to fix it completely yet. Fingers crossed that it will be resolved soonest !!! MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
