2004 V8 - Cut Out - Now Wont Start

New one to me, completely flummoxed:

Driving down the road and the engine splutters for 30 seconds and then cuts out completely, so coasted to a lay-by.

Car now refuses to restart.

RAC diagnosed as faulty Camshaft Sensor, backed up by my own diagnostics software. OBDC Code is: P0348 BMW - Camshaft Position Sensor 'A' Circuit High Input Bank 2

However, I have swapped Camshaft Sensors from our other L322 and the problem (and same error message) persists.

I don't think it's fuel pump/relay/ecu because it was running on LPG at the time it cut out. I don't think it's LPG related because it always starts on Petrol and I have turned the LPG system off now.

Any thoughts?

My fear is that the timing chain may have slipped on one bank, but I would have thought it would still splutter along on the other bank, partially firing on the bad bank. But I get nothing, other than a smell of petrol after it's been turning over and failing to start.

Thanks Stan, all looks good.

Been doing some research - wonder whether I actually have 2 problems - a questionable camshaft sensor but an actual failed Crankshaft sensor?

My understanding is that the crankshaft will definitely cause the engine not to run?

I bought a new crankshaft sensor, around £45 I think, it's under the sump area. - didn't need it as mine was a camshaft sensor after all. - they are more expensive, but you have two to prove yours. However, I would be worth retro-proving your own bits onto the working l322 you have to prove the fault...

Unfortunately Stan, both of those posts have no resolution, I assume after Vento got the car fixed he left the forum Smile

Good shout John - I'll try and grab the Crank sensor out of the other one to swap over...

Got it booked in to a garage to get the crankshaft sensor replaced, will tow it with the other L322 following the towing procedure.

the crankshaft sensor is a two minute job, two allen head bolts, and a connector. Then pull it out...i did mine at off road height, spare wheel under the sidestep, lay under step, and reached under. mine was stranded, so it was easiest option. as said, i needed a camshaft sensor, (another 2 minute job,) i couldn't find a secondhander, and new was an order in job, so i found that an ebay seller did them new for a m62 engine, but they had a male socket on, not the famale i needed, so as it was only £15 each, i solderered them to the old females, and ---VROOOM!

Unfortunately it turns out I have no compression on one bank - this means the valves are not operating as they should.

So at this point I suspect a serious issue with the timing has occurred. Either the chain has jumped or something worse. It's common for the plastic chain guides to fail as they wear over time.

Garage is going to lift the camshaft cover tomorrow to see what lies beneath.

Will keep you posted.

To follow up - the plastic timing chain guides (yes, plastic, Thanks BMW!) had failed and become snagged in the chain and ripped off, the chain was then allowed to move, which pretty much destroyed everything.

£3,500 later, I've just had a reconditioned engine installed... can't say I love her anymore so about to put her on eBay Sad

Had this happen to my last one. Timing chain jumped because of worn plastic guides. Is it feasible to have these changed as a preventative measure though I should imagine it's a PITA of a job
