Battery flattened by radio..

The other day i was sat in the car, had the radio on and after around 20 minutes just cut off, and then the car wouldn't start etc.
The AA come and said its the battery, so they got it going and the engine was fine (went down by just 0.3v) Ran around in it to charge the battery and all was good.

Never knew that you could run a battery just low enough so the car engine wouldn't start by playing the radio.. How can i expect to watch tv then? Will the engine need to be running in order for me to watch tv when parked?

Had same problem on my last one.

Car was fine in use, but 30 mins with radio killed the battery.

Eventually fitted new battery and was ok after that for as long as I wanted. (was very nervous though to start with in case it still happened.)

I thought the car would protect its self from this by shutting down or did you have the ignition on as well ?
Bad new though , be aware batteries never recover properly from going really flat might need a new one soon Sad . 2008 MY Supercharged

i ad a similar problem, i was fitting leds and kept on switching the ignition on [not starting engine] and off quite a few times ..went to start the car , battery flat, left for 2 hours and it was ok...i think its the first signs of a battery giving up ... ... - .- -.

I've sat on the side of the motorway with the radio, side lights and hazards on for 3 hours and was able to start up afterwards. I've also run the park heating (max a/c button, not pre-heater) for a couple of hours.

What will drain your battery super quick is leaving the ignition on. Accessory position is fine, but the next step keeps the ign coils active which takes quite a lot of juice.

If it was just the radio on accessory setting then I would ay you need a new battery.

yep - found that one out today... leaving the ignition in II (that's the last position before crank) keeps everything active.....radio with play for ages, but take the keys out Smile

Got back from a weeks holiday yesterday, went to collect the RR from the long stay car park, t had 1 flat tyre, 2 soft tyres and a flat battery. Looks like it's new battery time. It's gone flat in under 10 mins before with the doors open and radio on when hoovering it out.

Looks like a bitch to replace too! 2006 Mercedes CLS

Am I the only person here who has flattened a radio with a battery?

It was quite impressive Twisted Evil

Oh and none of my FFRR's have allowed the radio to run *after* the vehicle thinks it is low on charge, if you keep switching it on *after* it has turned it off....then it DID warn you Wink Land Rover Addict
