Reversing camera recommendations... (02-05)

Hi all, looking at fitting a reversing camera to my vogue, have seen the Wiki and have ordered everything I need apart from the camera itself as theres so many different options I've no idea which to get! I'd like to mount it in the stock place under the spoiler if possible, so has anybody done it here that can point me in the direction of the camera they bought?

When you say you have bought every thing you need what is it you have bought?
How do you intend to make the camera come on your screen when reverse is selected?

I fitted a number plate camera when i bought my vogue, i bought a Givf interface to connect it too which enables it to show up on my screen once reverse was selected. You can also connect other A/V devices to the Givf interface as well as the camera.

The problem with having an after market camera on the spoiler, which i believe is the original fitting place if car comes with camera is the wiring due to the way the boot opens, hence why i went for the number plate camera and got the live +ve feed from the reverse light and easier to feed wires into car.

there are plenty to choice from on flebay. good luck, let us know how you get on. Range rover td6 54 reg touch screen

I've ordered a loom which plugs into the TV module to allow multiple AV in connections and apparently has a specific input for a reversing camera - not sure how the multiple bit works in terms of switching between them though?

Also ordered a 30a 4 post switching relay and some spade connectors for switching the display when reverse is engaged. Regards to the reverse lights I was planning to follow the feed back into the car and tap into it there rather than run the cable all the way round to the lights themselves. I am open to suggestions though but the main thing is I want it to be discreet and unnoticeable unless you knew it was there! Does your camera come as part of a numberplate surround? My plates are stuck on pretty well, not sure how easy it'll be to remove them in order to fit a plate surround...

Which ffrr do you have is it the pre touch screen non MOST system. (From what you say im assuming it is).
Slightly confused on how you intend to bring the wire from the upper spoiler into the car and then to the Tv module bearing in mind you still need to connect to the reverse lights.

My camera screw into the plate and the wire is easyly fed into the reverse light which sits right by the number plate then into the car via the same wire loom. Mine is a MOST system hence why iv gone for the givf interface.

Im sure iv read some where on here of the mehod your trying to go for with the relay. Have you tried a search on the forum there should be loads of successful attempts of camera fitments in here. Range rover td6 54 reg touch screen

Its pre touchscreen yes, not sure what MOST is so will assume I don't have it.

I figured the reverse light feed must come into the car somewhere and go into the boot/side compartments so I was planning to take the feed there rather than the bottom half of split tailgate to join up to the relay which will then go to the TV unit in the side of the boot (pin 17 I've read is what's used to switch the feed on the screen at the front). I could then also tap into the same wire to power the camera itself or just used an ignition switched live, which would mean the camera is always on when car is on but not shown on screen until the reverse is engaged.

Have you got any pictures of your camera fitment?

I am also in the process of fitting a camera to my 2002 FFRR. I have completed all the wiring using 2 relays, both use power from the reversing circuit to switch the relays. One relay switches a permanent live taken from the fuse box on the driver's side of the boot whilst the other relay is used to switch the wire that need to be connected to pole 17 of the blue connector on the TV module, to earth to enable the camera feed to be displayed on the SatNav screen when reverse is selected.
I mounted the relays side by side on the subwoofer housing (no rattles yet) as the location is close to the TV module (and access is good) and have mounted the first (more of that later) camera in the centre of the black trim as the bottom of the rear bumper.

Here are the relays:

And here's the camera that I've fitted that sadly doesn't work, it's not completely pushed in as I need to get it out again.

The problem that I've had with choosing the camera is that almost all of the ones on the market come from China and although they may be described as being NTSC format (which is necessary for the BMW system fitted in FFRRs of our vintage) the one I have bought isn't actually NTSC and as such isn't usable as the image is grey and constantly scrolls on the screen

I have bought another camera of the same design but that hasn't arrived yet. I have asked the supplier to confirm that this "new" camera is NTSC and they have confirmed but I'll believe it when I see it.

I did buy a different design camera which does work. Although this one is wireless, I can use the cables that are with my non-working camera to make them "wired"

This was supplied by "masstextile" and provides a good picture. If I am unsuccessful in obtaining a working camera that with fit in place of the one I've already got in the bumper, I will fit this working camera into the top tailgate next to the number plate light so it will provide a view of my towbar to assist with hitching my trailer, although routing the wires into the tailgate will be harder.

This is the thread which prompted me to install the camera

Best of luck
