Hi Folks - Just been told that to do an oil change on my 2010 MY the oil needs to be sucked out rather than warmed up and left to drain (like the good old days.!) Is that really the case?

You have the choice of either ,but on a TDV8 their is two sump plugs.

I too am considering an oil change but like the idea of a vertical pump. Although its a D4 this vid is very helpful:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wbftim2AR2w

I heard the sump plugs are not designed for regular use and can be easily mis threaded / worn but do wonder how pumping out removes all the crud from the sump.

I think a sump off every so often to clean the magnets and do a visual is ok but why get in such a mess using the 'old' method?

The pumps are easy to get hold of.

The other thing to bear in mind is that there is no dipstick on the 4.4 (the wiki is for the 3.6) so having an accurate (and clean) record of amount of oil removed means you can put the same back in!!

there is no dipstick on the 4.4

Surely this is fundamental vehicle check for the user or do LR offer lifetime engine replacements ? .

The dipstick is virtual i.e. its on the service menu on the TFT display.

Pretty pointless if you ask me. I much prefer a mechanical thingy I can touch and check.

Back to my point about oil changes, at least with a dip stick you are not relying on a sensor to tell you how much oil is in the car you can use your own sensors located each side of your nose.

All the more reason to use the pump oil change method - at least you can put in the same quantity as you get out with no risk of over filling? 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus

LR MD's only ever suck the oils out of 09> 322's as there is no access to the drain in the sump... 3.6's & 4.4's

I have two sump plugs on my TDV8 which is a 2010 REG, and the build date is 2010

As do they all SS

BUT, the subframe is in the way hence why LR dealers suck the oil out sir

I've been a sucker for many years and the oil is very clean. Even on a diesel, the oil is still golden in colour after 1000 miles if you get all of it out.

A tip I picked up just a few hours ago - After pumping out the oil to empty (as much as you can and then leave for half an hour to get the dregs) add 0.5 litres, wait... and then suck that out too! Its gotta be clean this way.

BMW have been "Suckers" for around 25 years now and Mercedes-Benz for around the last 20 years.


Just don't swallow.
