I would like a ski hatch - but I don't have one.

Anyway, went to Grindelwald today.

Girlfriend borrowed my ski's while I rented a pair. I've been thinking of buying a set of free ride ski's and particularly a set of Rossignal Soul 7's. Here's a pair modelled by the delightful Mandi.

The shop had a pair, so I rented them.

I was well pleased with them. On piste, you really don't loose that much when carving - they do carve fine at the speeds I generally go (not very fast!). When the piste is cut up, rutted and moguley they floated over all that in a most delightful way.

Off piste, I was finally able to do some off-pisting. I won't pretend I was good at it, but it was fun and I could do it. Only once did I sink up to my knees when I lent forward too much, and then it was quite a task to shake the ski's out.

Overall, they really are go anywhere ski's, and the performance compromise is so small you don't have to worry about it unless you're doing some really serious carving or off-pisting. They are also very light - which is a big bonus for me.

Only downside is they're quite hard to carry as they're wider than my hand!

I will be investing in a pair.

Yes

I have one fitted - if you lower the arm rest, then the leather piece at the back is velcro'd at the top - that's where the bag comes through.

It's missing the flap for the boot side though.

I don't actually use mine as it's not very big - we take 4 pairs of skis & 4 snowboards, so they all go on the roof

While I've quite liked the idea of snow shoes the problem I had was if you can use snow shoes, you can also go skiing, and I'd rather go skiing.

Anyway, I've ordered my new skis but they hadn't arrived by last weekend so I invested in a some snow shoes.

No, I'm not a quadruped, the other pair belong to my girlfriend.

We took a route up a local mountain, the Rigi, as below.

The picture doesn't do the heights justice. The height from the lake to the start of our hike at Seebodenalp is the same as from Seebodenalp to Rigi Staffel - the top of our hike.

First of all, walking on snowshoes is more tiring than normal shoes. The deeper the snow the more exhausting it is. Even though the surface area of your feet is greatly increased, in soft powder you will still sink up to your knees and draging your leg out is hard work.

In some steep and deep areas it was two steps up and slide one step back. Towards the top of our hike at Rigi Staffel it was so steep and the snow was so deep that we had to dig our way up with our hands. Fortunately, there wasn't much of that.

I've done the hike a few times in the summer and it takes a bit less than three hours. In winter on snow shoes it took 5.5 hours - much longer than I thought and it meant we arrived back after dark. The new snow had covered the path and it was difficult to find the route back at times. Stupid me - next time I will plan far more carefully.

There was no way we could've really done the hike without snow shoes, normal shoes would've been really horrible.

Overall, I've changed my opinion about snow shoes. The weather wasn't very nice, and I would not have enjoyed skiing in that weather, but I did enjoy the hike - although it went on too long. Skiing is also an all day affair, where as hiking can be for an hour or two. I see snow shoes as complimentary rather than competing, so I'm glad I bought them, and if I go skiing for the weekend I'll take them incase the weather is bad. :thumbsup:

I was going to write there are worse places to have lunch, but then I ordered the gamberi and they brought 5 tasteless prawns in a tasteless sause and changed £5.26 per prawn.
