How? Safely jack & use axle stands L322 LR Workshop Man

This post contains key extracts from the:
Landrover Workshop Manual, L322 Range Rover Service Procedures - Lifting and Towing (Jack & Axle stand positions)

Safety first and never guess!

Before, lifting, jacking or otherwise using axle stands with your L322 you should read the following extracts in conjunction with the below links acquired from the LR Workshop Manuals, all accessible via the Forum Wiki.

Importantly, this post contains illustrations showing where it is recommended to position axle stands when lifting both the front and the rear of the L322.

I have seen bits and pieces of the information contained within this post on the forum before but never all together and, for example, until doing some research today, I had never seen the LR recommended illustrations as to where to position rear axle stands and I didn't actually know where to position them which could be lethal if someone rushed into inappropriately lifting their L322. Therefore, I created this post because the online manuals are not always the easiest documents to navigate through.

For the professional and for DIYer, it must be safety first every time.

" Lifting –
The following instructions must be carried out before
raising the vehicle off the ground:
• Use a solid level ground surface.
• Apply hand brake.
• Select 'P' on automatic gearbox selector.
• To avoid damage occurring to the under body
components of the vehicle the following jacking
procedures must be adhered to:

DO NOT POSITION JACKS OR AXLE STANDS
UNDER THE FOLLOWING COMPONENTS –
• Body structure other than approved jacking
points
• Bumpers
• Fuel lines
• Fuel tank
• Brake lines
• Front or rear suspension arms
• Transfer box
• Steering linkage
• Front or rear differential units
• Engine sump
• Automatic gearbox

Vehicle jack –
The jack provided with the vehicle is only intended for
use in an emergency, for changing a tyre. DO NOT
use the jack for any other purpose. Refer to Owner's
Handbook for vehicle jack location points and
procedure. Never work under a vehicle supported
solely by the vehicle jack.

Hydraulic jack –
A hydraulic jack with a minimum 1500 kg, 3,300 lbs
load capacity must be used.

WARNINGS:
• Do not commence work on the
underside of the vehicle until suitable axle
stands have been placed in their correct
position.

• Always chock the wheels when jacking. The
handbrake may be ineffective when the wheels
are off the ground.

point to avoid damaging the body / component.

• Carefully lower jack until vehicle sits securely on
axle stands.

• WARNING: Always support the vehicle on axle
stands when using a jack.

• Before commencing work on underside of vehicle re-
check security of vehicle on stands.

Well, to be honest, I looked under the car to find the rear diff (oil change) and due to where it's located, did not fancy getting under there until knowing exactly where the axle stand etc should be positioned and after much forum searching and online workshop manual navigation, I found what I've often wondered about so thought I'd capture it for the future reference of numpties like me Mr. Green

You're right, it's not rocket science, it's LR science... That'll be why the authors of the LR workshop manuals saw fit to include it in the manuals their Technicians use! Very Happy

You don't know what you don't know... Better safe than sorry

Does the suspension not need to be set to low then locked ? I know on the q7's there is a jacking mode that locks the car at a certain height Range Rover Vogue 2006 4.4 AJV8 | Buckingham Blue | Parchment Leather | Supercharged Grill+Side Vents | CA02 HEY ( NOT 02 PLATE )

Well, my axle stands do not like the part of the sub frame offered in the workshop manuals image.

On the first attempt, the driver's side sub frame/ vehicle weight resting on the axle stand, all looked ok (not perfect due to the shape of the sub frame resting point and the shape of the axle stand, but it looked ok'd all on a solid, level floor). So, I followed the workshop guidelines/ common sense and checked the stability of said 'under load' axle stand... And it slid off the sub frame!

I had other support measures in place to avoid injury or damage. Rocket science it is not but using axle stands on the rear seem more difficult that on the front. So be complacent at your peril.

ps... @markcaughey, I set the car to off road height before using jacks and axle stands and I just left the driver's door off the latch. The car jacked easily, my clearance to eventually work under the axle stand supported car was good and the car sat there for a few hours, the suspension not once lowering itself.

Thumbs Up I did the same. As the pad lock only comes on in access height think that's more for if you are taking the wheels of the car.

Pld 118 - how did you get on changing your diff oil ? Did the syringe from screw fix do the job ? I picked mine up yesterday along with the hex sockets. And iv went under and freed all the necessary bolts. Bit of wd40 over night done the trick. Range Rover Vogue 2006 4.4 AJV8 | Buckingham Blue | Parchment Leather | Supercharged Grill+Side Vents | CA02 HEY ( NOT 02 PLATE )
