Hi. I am looking to purchase my first RR. A 2007 vogue 3.6 td v8 with 60000 miles, 2 owners and very clean is available.

Is this a good buy and am I looking at a reliable and break down free few years with this car? My annual mileage is circa 5000.

Nobody buying a Range Rover buys one for reliability and breakdown free years! Even new ones!

How long is the piece of string you have Rob?

As far as reliability is concerned, take a look through this site and pick up as many tips as you can for
A, viewing the car and spotting potential issues
B, if she passes muster, what preventative maintenance is required to keep her reliable

My experience would suggest cars from rural areas your side of the pond can take quite a hammering due to lack of motorways... Constant potholed A & B road use, weather (rust) etc etc so, take your time and check thoroughly my friend...

For that mileage why not get a petrol, they seem more reliable?

The short answer is no probably not. There are good ones out there, but even they will have maintenance requirements which go above and beyond normal cars.

Things which require attention at that mileage may include

Alternator
Battery
Suspension components
Track rods
Possible egr problems
Rusty tailgates
Rust on rear wheel arches
Gearbox oil and filter time
Diff oils

Have a look at the buying guide in the wiki there are plenty of hints and things to look out for There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

As above, buy wisely and keep it properly maintained. In a total of 7 years of RR ownership I have never failed to get to my destination driving one. Running costs (apart from fuel) have been reasonable especially considering how sophisticated these vehicles are. I would also echo the above concerns over buying a diesel for the mileage you do. It's similar annual mileage to mine and in the real world my 5.0SC is genuinely not much harder on fuel than my TD6 was (mostly short journeys).

Be warned though, the rewards of owning/driving are addictive.

If you want a second pair of eyes to check a prospective purchase over, I'm happy to offer my experience (such as it is).

Finally for complete peace of mind get one with a comprehensive warranty, this will push the capital & maintenance budgets though. Lots of stuff on here about warranties and are good research material. Should've been old enough to know better...doh!

I went for a 4.2 SC over a 3.6 TDV8 due to the potential risk of turbo failure and or engine damage with a significant repair bill, don't want to scare you off but you must make an informed decision Regards

As mentioned, when on song the L322 RR is a superb, addictive and desirable car.

Realism is needed too.

Whatever you might pay as a purchase price, if you are intent on buying one, even if it has a good warranty and/ or is otherwise from a reputable seller, then knowing what I know now, I:

A. Would research based on learned/ this forum recommendations to find a locally accessible highly recommended and trustworthy RR specialist to fully inspect the car before committing to buy (if you are serious about buying one, keeping one for any period of time and are neither a mechanic or mechanically competent, then £100, £200 or a few hundred GBP or Euro should be money well spent in the context of the potential foibles, complexities of these cars and the likely purchase price to secure a good one).

B. Would buy the best model I could afford having regard to age, mileage, condition and this forum/ professional advice on preventative/ maintenance work yet to be done, commensurate with the age and mileage of the prospective purchase (without foolishly paying over the odds given the likely age and mileage of the car at the point of purchase).

C. Would not rush into spending money on doing my own cosmetic upgrades.

D. Would prefer to defer on cosmetic upgrades until I had 'lived with' and was confident about the integrity of the car and the mechanics/ electrics being sound.

E. Would not - even with a good warranty - if not mechanically minded, contemplate buying one without being sure that there was always £2k to £3,000GBP available to me to pay for making good any unforeseen maintenance or repair works arising.

F. Would never lose sight of the fact that all that glitters is not gold and these cars can, from a superficial visual perspective at least, wear high mileage, abuse and neglect very well.

G. Would still buy one in a heartbeat because if you can realistically stand the running costs, the attention to detail needed to keep on top of the car and also stomach proper maintenance/ costs, there will be few cars that match what the L322 RR has to offer.

F. Would get actively involved in contributing to this forum because the support, advice and good will of members is worth it's weight in gold if you own one of these cars.

Buy right and you will enjoy one of the best cars and also a brilliant forum that never sleeps!

i would echo what "pld118" has said above. Its not realistic to be able to expect to run one of these on a budget, its really not possible if you want something that won't let you down.

However, they are exceptional vehicles when well looked after and simply fantastic to drive.

I purchased and own a 3.6 tdv8 which was a one owner vehicle, expecting to have the diesel be a good economical option to a petrol V8. I was wrong, in retrospect, I feel the diesel is a bit of a false economy, you may get 4 or 5 miles to the gallon more, but the general servicing and maintenance costs are a lot higher for diesel.

With your low millage it may be more sensible to consider a 4.2 or 5.0 petrol super charge version.

I'm considering the trade up.from my 03 td6 to either a 3.6 tdv8 or a 4.2 sc ,the main thing putting me off the supercharged is the interior as for my budget they all seem to have the same interior style as.the td6, yet all the tdv8 s come with terrain response etc. Like lots of people have said I'll take some time and not rush in, what age did they start putting the facelift interiors in the petrols

Birchyman, all FF's got terrain response and the interior upgrade for the 2007my> be it the TDV8 or the SC... So, remember sir, 2006> means higher RFL 2007my signified the death of the TD6/birth of the TDV8 which all were 2007my> and had the facelift & terrain response... The 4.2 SC engined cars ran throughout and mirrored the 2007my updates the diesel cars got

IMO get a slightly older and cheaper SC pre facelift so the cheaper road tax as the money saved could buy nearly two tanks of fuel

There are some about ranging from £9k+ but if you get one under 100k miles you can get a semi decent warranty on it as long as it has FULL service history and backup to prove it and as someone who has driven NI roads quite a bit over the years and the motorways I'd recommend the SC.

The only way a TDV8 in your circumstances would make sense in my books would be if you were running it on cherry and running the gauntlet doing so.

Also the SC has less engine issues than the TDV8 over all but its not perfect! FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Firstly, thank you to everyone who have taken the time and effort toreply to my request for help with my decision. I was amazed with the quality of the content and your interest to assist.

My decision is partly Hampered by thge fact that my current car, Merc CLK, owned from new and now just over 9yrs age, has been a great success. It has 120000 miles and only broke down the once, a few months back with a blown intercooler.Over the period of ownership, excluding fuel and depreciation, the car has cost just ₤15 per week to run .I get ave 46 mpg out of the diesel 2.1 ltr engine.

Would the M class be a better choice or would that also besimilarunning cost and reliability to the RR? l
