Cheap Tablet?

Hi all
Have searched but cannot find anything either way.
Looking for a cheap Tablet for Dads birthday middle Jan. All he really needs is wifi, Ebay, Email and basic internet. Maybe a ebook or a film (but will be real rare!)
He's got an iPhone 4s but struggles a bit with anything he hasn't been shown how to do.
He needs the biggest screen he can.

My obvious choice would have been Apple IPad (even a refurb older one) but just wondered if anyone has had any experience with any of these £100ish Android units?
Or even what i should be looking at as a useable spec? Can't really be paying out £400 on New iPads at moment.

Many Thanks

I have a 7" Galaxay Tab2 ST210 is the model. being advertised for about £70 now I beleive. Best bet would be pay a bit more for the 10" which I bought for my mother last year, just under £200. If you install team viewer on it you can remotely connect and help them out with problems. Does what it says on the lid as you asked. personally the Apple stuff is top dog but I dont see the point unless you have cash falling through your hands.

I got myself a Samsung galaxy tab4 , 8" screen, so far that's been great for what I want it to do. For under £140 it a bargain.
My daughter has a Tesco hudle 2 and that's good too ( bought that for 6 quid Whistle .......the rest where Tesco vouchers! Laughing Laughing ) If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

Tel,

Apple have refurbished 16gb I-Pad Air Mk1 Wi-Fi only for £269 at the mo. I've got the mk1 Air albeit with 32gb and it suits my needs (some games, films, music etc). Wouldn't waste money on an Air mk2 as they are hardly any different to the Mk1. Depends what the intended use is, a few books and movies and games, 16gb should be fine.

Not used other tablets as I am an Apple Tart and the tech in the house is mainly Apple.

Cheers,

Cheers guys!
Gives me some awesome starting points!
The larger 10inch screen is a must!
I'd love to go Apple for him (as its the same as his iphone to use) but am (selfishly) trying desperately to save for a new car, and as stupid as it sounds, if I break into the money here and there it will be a slippery slope! Enjoyable, but slippery!! Accept, some days your the pigeon, some days your the statue!

Just remember if you do get the ipad4 it will be the new charger needed. But you will be ok for some future IOS updates. The iPhone 4s still is just about up with new updates, and maybe the music speaker box he uses? I've never used android, and haven't a clue on their update vulnerability, but the ipad3 I use is still top banana. (iPad retina) the screen is so sharp and touch responsive......

If it's only low power apps he wants then an old iPad 1 will do. Obviously no camera, but it should work for most things and they can be had for about £120.

Will run email, Internet, basic games, iplayer and most things he would want to do. If he then finds he get loads of use out of it then get a better one line an air etc. find the apple stuff much more user friendly, my mother uses here all the time.

I got one to use for films in the car for the kids and it works fine and dandy. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

There are lots of good tablets out there. Apple is great, but also the most $$.

As you said he isn't innately tech savvy, but can use an iPhone, I think that that's a BIG vote for an iPad because of the similar user experience across all the models. If cost is an issue, get an older one. There are plenty of folks who think they MUST have the newest one, so there are lots around second hand.

Personally, I'd look at the iPad 3 or newer for the Retina display.

Galaxy Tab 10 is what I would recommend. They are the best bang for buck in that sector of the market. The others below are generally really polished turds with bits that haven't made QC for the big names and cobbled together really cheaply to keep the price low.
Ones like the hudl and such have their own issues that keep me well clear of them 😉

Recently I deployed 700 of the above after testing a fair few different pads that the customer chose and that was the one I gave the highest points across a range of items Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

We're an Apple family - all got iPad & iPhones & a few Mac's

However, I picked up some Tesco Hudl's recently - basically because they were 'free' with Tesco points - they cost me no actual cash - I've been impressed with them. So if you happen to have some Tesco points, you could do worse.....

You could potentially nab a bargain iPad or iPad mini as phones4u stock is being sold off at auction.
