Had a good read through the Winter Tyres VS Summer Tyres thread have decided that if it is feasible I would like to have Winter Tyres. However I need some advice:
I have a 2009 5.0SC, it currently has on it 22” OF Tiger Wheels ( came with the car)
If I was to get Winter Tyres the options are:
Buy 22” wheels with WT
Buy 20” wheels with WT – (if so do any adjustments need to be made to change from 22” to 20”?)
Sell my current OF 22” and buy 2 sets of 20” if they are more appropriate than the 22”- 2011 5.0SC Santorini Black

rrDriver, with all due respect you are in London mate, why do you need winter tyres

I would go with 20" as the side wall would be higher so less chance of curbing.

My main motorway driving is to the West Midlands monthly, if we get "2010 style snow" i would rather be safer than safe. I suppose i am erring on the side of caution. Or i being silly? 2011 5.0SC Santorini Black

Ah well now make sense, the West Midlands, cant say for 22s bit IMHO a good AT tyre would suffice, I use GG Ats, not to everyones liking but does me

Yes but Cooper LTZ and GG AT's are not winter tyres are they ? and will off reduced winter performance on a cold wet motorway. Both tyres mentioned are optimised for the American market where they demand AT tyres with very high milage and are therefor made from a relatively hard compound that offers no winter tarmac advantage.

I think the OP was asking more about any adjustments needed in going from 22" to 20" ( none by the way)
Most people would say sell the OF's and buy some nice 20" and a set of winter and a set of summer tyres . 2008 MY Supercharged

I would agree, sell the 22"and invest in a set of top summer and winter tyres on 20". I like the 20" wheels better on FFRRs, to me that is the right size in proportion to the car itself.

Proper winter tyres are more than just profile suitable for snow, it is also a better compound that offers short brake distances (and better sideways traction) on cold surfaces. That is the bit that would be important to me, not the snow capabilities, or at least not in countries where snow is rare. However if you do go to snow bound areas, even from time to time, the winter tyres are a definite must of course but on the non snowy parts of Europe where temps drop below 7C, winter tyres have the better friction that can make the difference in critical conditions  MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

I would much prefer 20's to 22's.

My lowly 3.6 TDV8 is running on OF Tiger 22" and I've fitted 305/40R22 114V Hankook RH06's.

I've been towing the tri-axle 14' cattle trailer loaded with hay to horsey friends with absolutely no issues - including up some very steep knarly field access tracks covered in 3' of snow.

Late yesterday I had to make a "silly speed" dash 30 miles across country to collect my father and get him to see my daughters school play. Handling was fantastic - no aqua or snow planing at all.

They aren't winter tyres per-se but they are M&S rated. The sidewalls are vey tough and both wifey and I are impressed with the improved handling (wet & dry) over the Pirellis

Ok - so probably not as sound advice as above but it saved me the cost of a set of wheels and I still like the look (cos' I'm a young child at heart ).

How on earth can AT's be a good option for motorway driving

If you like the 22's then keep them, but I'd go 20's for the winter

If you're impatient you can skip to 2 mins in, but it's all worth watching -

I suppose when i think of winter - i am conditioned to think of Snow, ( not that we really get it anymore) however, that said, I do now, ( through this forum) understand that winter tyres are not just for snow BUT for cold weather ( winter)

Through research - i would like to err on the side of caution that they are safer, I understand that they are not a necessity, but they are safer. So if i can i will get them. apologies to all those who feel that WT arent worth it, but that is an informed choice. 2011 5.0SC Santorini Black

That's exactly the way I think too

There's some initial outlay, and you need to have space to store them, but after that it costs the same and you feel better / safer

I do get wound up though when people try to tell me that they don't work - I'm fine with people taking the decision not to buy them - I just hate it when they try to justify that decision by telling me they don't make any difference.
