Hi, the air suspension compressor on my car has given up so i thought rather than mess about with it i would just order a new one from island 4x4 It turned up today , i just removed everything from my boot and its different to the one currently in my car.

This is like the type i have ordered, is states 02-05 , my car is an 05 but my old compressor is square not round.

55 plate is around the change over, my 55 plate is an 06 model with the facelift and touchscreen (AJV8 engine as well but see you are diesel so i think the engine did not change). If you have the facelift smaller one piece lights and grill and touchscreen you will have the 06 model. If you have touchscreen and the bigger two piece lights then it is a changeover model using some BWW and some Ford bits so not as clear which model to choose for parts etc. There is a difference between knowing your sh!t and knowing you're sh!t

Hi ya bud, think you might have the wrong unit, I think that 2005 was the change over year, if your compressor has the 2 blue pipes then it's a Hitachi unit not the Wabco that's in a round dome like container for up to chassis number 5A999999. The Hitachi unit goes on chassis number 6A00001 on wards.
You'll need to check the VIN number, it's stamped on a plate on the nearside, left, suspension turret, or at the bottom of the windscreen nearside. It should begin with SALLM , the bit you need is the end of that number, it will either be a 5A------ or 6A-----. That will tell you which pump you need, and just about all the other parts too. Once you've found that number I'd keep it handy because I get the feeling that your car is a change over one. And as such you could find all manner of old / new type parts, just depends on how quickly the factory ran out of the old stuff and then went over to the new.
I've got a 1966 Thunderbird that's a nightmare to get bits for, because they changed the model slightly every year. It's a real minefield if you haven't got the vin to hand  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Thanks for your great advice is much appreciated, i just checked my vin and it is a 6A------- Teach me not to check the item i'm changing first Are the Hitachi units prone to failing as much as the earlier types? as most of the ones i find for sale are the round wabco ones.

Sorry Bud, but I'm not in a position to answer that one, as I have the Waboc unit. However I will say that if the Hitachi is anything like the Wabco, it will only have a small piston whizzing up and down frantically trying to keep up with the pressure demands of the suspension. If you use the low exit button or regularly go in to off road mode, you is going to ware it out quicker. Having said that just going over 60 Mph will cause the car to lower it's self, and therefore will require air to return to normal height. Then there is the well sealed nature of the air suspension, is it any wonder that the compressor gives up?
If you look on ebay it's not just rebuild kits for the Range Rovers that are on offer, Audi, Merc, and many more feature there too. I think that anything providing a blow job for that long will give up  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

yes i think your right, everytime i park up at my house i put the car into access mode when i get out, maybe i shouldnt do this so much and just let the misses jump down from up high

Just went through something similar with my mum's new (to her) RRS SC, as the compressor had gone.

Local specialist ordered one from a main dealer, I protested at the price and told them they can buy the Hitachi ones online for half the price and they said that they heard the Hitachi ones had a reputation for going bang in under a year.

So, with a massive amount of irony the genuine item arrived next day to be DOA  Discovery 4 HSE

Hitachi were dropped by Land Rover in favour of another manufacturer (three letters, but i cannot remember at this time of night what they are)

So, if you order a new one Jaiscossie, make sure its NOT the old part numbered Hitachi unit sir

The Hitachi ones are for sale a lot cheaper by the aftermarket sales companies (around £100) but are prone to fail quickly...
